Some Buds and I are renting a boat slip to bait out for crappie. Is other folks fishing in your slip a problem? Not worried about boats. Just others that rent slips. Or is it just a free for all and everyone fishes everywhere?

At our slip, we fish anywhere we want, unless the slip renter asks us to keep out.

We brushed out several open slips for everyone to fish, hoping they would stay off ours. Doesn't seem to be working though. I think it's respectful to at least get permission.

At our marina, it's open to fish in any slip unless the renter is presents and asks you not to.

At Joe Pool Marina you can only fish the slip you lease unless you have the permission of other lease holders to fish their slips.

I haven't seen this enforced but I have not been on any dock besides my dock.

I imagine in most cases it polite and possibly the rule as well to ask before you fish a given leased area .

when I was paying for a slipat bardwell it was commor to find stragers in my boat usingmy minnows and maybe my rod. I LOST SOME GEAR. previous oweners only wanted the 5.00$ a head.

It really depends on how your slip is set up. If it is somewhat enclosed lets say with tarps, furniture or a porch and such I would say it is off limits but if it is wide open and along the walkway I say it is fair game. Common sense is used by most but there are those that fish anywhere and not respect or use common sense.

texsam, this is the dilemma all slip holders face.

You pay for the slip but everybody else in the world believes they have the right to fish your slip since the public "owns" the water contained in the slip.

All you can do is hope they respect your property and not steal your bait or equipment. And most do respect your property and do not steal your bait or equipment.

It is just a small percentage that are thieves and act bad, giving everybody a bad name with most slip holders.

So the only thing to do is expect these things to happen from time to time and enjoy your slip.



Just lock everything up that is portable and expect to find damages to your equipment from time to time as long as you lease the slip.

It's frustrating but just part of the life of a slip holder.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out that the only thing that can be done is accept it and continue to enjoy your slip.

Paying a fee to fish the barge does not give you any right to fish the slips. I understand one marina does allow people to fish the slips for a fee. All I can say about that marina is not fit for a family forum. I would never keep my boat there.

I have started a thread or two about this issue myself. But I recognize it is just a waste of time as the bad eggs will continue to act bad, regardless of what is said about their behavior. So why spoil your enjoyment of the slip by worrying about them.

I have had everything you said happen to me plus I have even had my mooring ropes cut several times so some sob could retrieve a cheap lure that he/she hung in the rope.

When it happens I say a few dozen choice words about their ancestry and lack of upbringing and sometimes come here to vent. But in the end they don't care what happens to my property since it does not cost them anything.

I personally feel that anybody who fishes a leased slip should first get the permission of the slip holder to fish the slip. But it isn't going to happen so I don't let it diminish my enjoyment of my slip (or future enjoyment since I have not had much enjoyment this year).

But unfortunately majority opinion on this board is that people have the right to fish any slip they want to fish and the slip holder can go to Hades if he doesn't like it.

So this is something slip holder must learn to live with since these attitudes can't be changed.

But venting does sometimes help.

I know what you mean Texsam. At bardwell they allow you to fish the slips and for a $5 fee... Not like Joe pool to where you can only fish the barge

That is why our slips @ Juniper Cove have locking gates to each slip. All the slip renters on our dock help out baiting them and we can fish any slip we want , but most of the time we only fish our own slip. What we have done is move our pontoon boats back about 5 ft. or so , and brush it out in front of them. When we are not using them we pull our boats back up and tie them off so the brush is under the boat. We have never had an issue of a person that is not paying for a slip using our dock. He would sure be in for a big surprise if he was caught using our minnows and poles we leave on our boats !
