They had a building that you could go inside and fish, but that is now closed, and they built like an add on small marina, with about 10 or 12 crappie holes in it. No bunk beds tho.. lol

Crappie House
This one belongs to my uncle... Sabine River above Toledo Bend.... If you know the area, there's some toads caught...

I think they were outlawed on most lakes back in the 80s. I know that they were on PK and Bridgeport. The authorities said it was because they had no sanitary facilities and were polluting the lakes. I can attest to this as I saw a lot of them with pipes that dumped into PK back when they were there. They also had a tendency to break loose from their moorings and become a hazard.
That said my uncle had one on PK and we caught a lot of fish out of it when I was growing up. Had my first beer in that old crappie house, was about 10 and my uncle gave me one because he forgot the sodas!

Are you talking about the Big Creek Marina itself? I have never seen a "crappie house" on Somerville and I fish Big Creek all the time. The marina is somewhat closed in with sheet metal blocking the wind but it is not a "house" to lay around or get too comfortable.
Or is there something else there that I missed?
I think these houses that they speak about are more like little shacks that you can fish in when the weather gets inclement.

Yeah it was the Big Creek barge/marina/pseudo crappie house. Pretty much a sheet metal enclosed collection of slips. I really need to make a trip there again soon and definitely when my son gets older! Hope it's still around then!

It will be. It is solid built and they charge for fishing all day till closing so I don't see it going away.

One more post and it's time for this topic to fade away but DANG this is the kind of weather I wish I had one of those old crappie houses! It's cold out there.

I owned a Crappie house on Lake Brownwood back in the late 1960s and it was a great place to fish and camp. Problem was it required lots of maintenance as it was floated on 55 gal drums and they tended to rust away over time and the steel booms to keep it away from the shore was always breaking in the wind. But, it was still a great piece of property and I don't know if I have ever owned anything more enjoyable.

I just looked at Lake Brownwood on Google Earth and it looks like there are still about 100 of them on McCartney Island. Mine was just across the lake from he spillway.
