I been fishing conventional for a while, however, fly fishing is been in the back of my head all the time so I when to Basspro to get more information and I ended up learning the casting basics thanks to the great customer service at the fly shop at Basspro Garland.
Before asking this question I want to point that I read the great article at the top of the list !
I see 3 options on what set up to buy,
1st. Plufger basic combo. 2nd. TFO rod and BPS reel only 3rd. BPS combo rod and reel with line.
Planning to fish local lakes, ponds and creeks if possible! Targeting Bass. Panfish, sandbass.
Any advice will be much appreciated !
Thanks in advance

Tfo. Enough said. Do not get a set up with stock line on it. Think about what you like to fish for the most and get a good line that will match what you like to do. Scientific anglers Mastery series has some good lines as well as Rio sharkskin and a newfound like of mine it is the high-end Cortland line it is really supple. You will about fall over when the line is not too far off from the price of the rod but cleaning it and using a line conditioners it will last several years. Really good line and the rod can cover up for a bad fly caster in my opinion if you're going to skimp anywhere you can get a low-end reel as long as it has a good smooth drag. And good luck with the new addiction.

I second the vote to not get a combo with a fly line. There are a few combos out there with cheap level lines on them. They can be frustrating if you know what you are doing, much less for a beginner. The Courtland 333 and 444 fly lines are very good, inexpensive (comparatively, lol) lines. I personally lean towards the 333(cheaper) or whatever name brand is in the bargain bin at the store of your choice. Most recommendations for beginners lean towards using a weight-forward floating line sized to the rod. (Don't start changing the line weight until you know what the rod casts like with the line it was designed for. You will be glad you did, later.) This can be a very fun way to fish when it come together for you. A further suggestion would be to find a pond or creek with a large population of sunfish. It is a lot less stressful learning line and fish management when you're not dealing with a fish-of-a-lifetime. If you get frustrated....WHEN you get frustrated, lol, take a break instead of trying to force it. This is supposed to be fun!
Welcome to the obsession. GLad to have you with us.

Obviously, I'm going to vote for TFO rods everytime. There are two free learning oportunities coming up that are not that far from you. > Tomorrow night, Tuesday, we're casting in Dallas. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...es#Post10348135> In two weeks, on November 3, we'll be talking about fly lines at the Dallas Fly Fisher's November meeting. I'll post more information on this one in a couple of days.

I'm new to fly fishing also (2yrs). My buddy talked me into going to cabelas and taking the free fly casting class. I've been thru the course at both stores in the Dallas area.they furnish everything you need to insure you can cast before you have to spend a dime. I bought an entry level combo from cabelas and have since graduated to TFO rods. I also met Rex at Texoma a few weeks back and he got me started with a few different casting techniques and I'm going to see how well I listened this weekend. I highly recommend TFO rods but I feel you should try a few different models and weights before you spend $200 for a rod, reel, and line to get started.
