Some years ago someone, probally Denny Brauer or someone like that, starting saying they'd get hits on crankbaits after "ripping" them out of grass.

Not wanting to sound uncool other guys starting saying they also catch fish when "ripping" crankbaits out of grass....

We all know the reality of this is that ripping a crankbait outta grass results in setting the hook on the grass.

Let's just keep it real in this.

Don't get me started on c-rigs "floating" your plastic above grass bang

I'm with TogiakTerror here. Cut that crankbait off your crankin' rod, tie it on your worm rod and find out what it feels like to clear your bait of grass while it's still in the retrieve. If you do get more grass while you're ripping it, let the bait rise and give it another rip. With the right rod the bait is now clear and ready to continue fishing.

I've had too many fish hit immediately after clearing the bait and letting it rise to doubt this technique works. The same technique works for a trap, except you don't give it time to rise after clearing it. You immediately go back to the retrieve.

I have no doubt many people here know we can pull the bait back within sight of the boat, let you see it loaded with grass, give it a rip and show you a clean bait. It's all part of a days fishing when fishing around grass. But it takes the right rod.

HA! I just had a flash back to the days of throwing a DD-22 around matted grass in Glade Creek on Fork! Those fish wanted a bait the size of the DD-22 but you barely had to pull it to get it to tick the top of the grass. It was more of a rod technique than a reel technique. The reel was just for taking up slack.

I recall a video Kerry Stafford did on Fork showing this same technique. Maybe you can youtube DD-22 and grass and find something.

My post was kinda in jest but I really have not had luck clearing grass like this.

My cb rod is a Loomis CBR 847 7ft heavy mod-fast action

That's what it says on it... Not a good rod for this?

crank bait rods won't have enough backbone to clear grass as rule of thumb. I believe you will be better to use a stiffer rod maybe worm rod. You will have to play them a little more tho

It's all in the line, the feel, and the equipment.
It also depends on the type of grass.
I just spent a week running a lipless crank bait through grass.. With a stiff rod and braid I could snatch it and clear it of hydrilla 90% of the time and that was when most bites would come.. However the duckweed was a whole different story..
