River is hotter than my shower so decided to try something different. Went to Saxet Lakes just outside of Victoria. Used to be called Ski Lakes or Blue Lakes. It is a series of old gavel pits, researched it and found in some areas could reach as deep as 100'. They made it into a park with lots of bank fishing but I took the kayak. Boat ramps are in terrible shape, lake is down one ramp is land locked.
Had no problem launching the kayak at one of the ramps. Lots of reeds along the edges so fished some bluegill for cutbait, got a few in the first minutes. Fish a while, no bites...move...repeat...repeat...repeat. Watched lots of large bass in the middle jump around. Tried, beef liver (no bites on that in the river either), Chemdogs bait, CJ's, worms, and old shrimp. Not a nibble so played with the bluegills.
About noon it is starting to get hot, wife said don't bring back that shrimp it was too ripe to keep in the fridge so packing up to leave I dump the shrimp along the reeds, reel in the worm, start to reel in the bluegill cut bait and my third pole bends over double.
Pull in a nice, very fat 2 pound channel. He had hit the pole I had tossed out with the shrimp on it. Big sigh, the bluegill were feasting on the shrimp I had tossed. Told the fish thank you, released it and kicked myself all the way back to the ramp.

My personal best is still swimming out there just getting bigger. One of these days I will quit feeding it.

I have had good luck on shrimp, just go to HEB or Walmart and buy a bag of uncooked, deshelled shrimp. Enough in a $6 bag to fish a few times. About the 3rd time out they are rather ripe and the wife doesn't want them back in the house let alone the fridge.
That was my first trip to Saxet Lake, Thursday going back and trying the north side of the road, there are more channels connecting the lakes on that side and much less fished. If the weather guesses aren't telling their usual lies we "should" get rain Wed night and Thursday afternoon.

the only time i ever caught anything on shrip was when I was a kid my grandfather use to take me down to were the snake river meets the colombia river we would fish at the very end of the snake river with rotten shrimp that was left to sit in some kind of oil I have found here in texas unless i am chumming or fishing over a baited hole things are very slow.

We have caught a lot of catfish using shrimp. We use a crappie hook and peel the shrimp and drift with the shrimp on bumping the bottom.
