My 18' logic won't anchor in windy conditions with 3 Danforth anchors I've tried. So this time I'm taking an 18" box anchor I made. Do these work in the bays? Or am I wasting my time?

i didn't have much luck with a standard danforth and ended up losing it. best thing that could have happened! i started using a sea spike anchor i had found and it works great. i have 5' of 3/8 chain on it and it always sticks and is easy to retrieve.

Do you have at least 4-5 feet of chain between the anchor and rope?

If not, that may be your problem.

5' chain and 3 different sized Danforths. I'm going to give the box anchor a try and I'll report back.

Nobody has used a box anchor? I'd sure love to hear someone's experiences with one. The Logic is basically made of Tupperware so power poles are not recommended.

I don't use chain. Instead I use a 1/2" metal dow rod or a 12" to 14" piece of allthread. I think the chain makes too much noise.
my 2 cents

The plastic coated chain is no good. It defeats the shock absorption of the chain. When deploying an anchor do not throw it. Just drop it and do not let the chain ball up. With proper scope a Danforth should hold unless you are in hard packed sand or oyster beds.

The amount of rode required and it's marginal effectiveness in grass is why I gave up my Danforths (Danfi?). I took the box anchor out yesterday afternoon and intentionally set on grass with a 10' rode. I'm really happy with it so far. 15 mph in the flats with only one reset.

While living in Florida we went on a few blue water trips grouper fishing and every boat had an anchor similar to this one on it of course much bigger. After talking with the captains I found out that someone was building them for the bigger boats around Clearwater somewhere.

I found one at one of the stores for my little 15 foot Flair Skiff and never broke loose. I had that one anchor as long as I owned the boat and it worked well on any bottom I set it down in. I also probably over did it with anchor rope length for the depth I was dropping it in, and used about 6 feet of 1 inch chain we had laying around the shop at work. It was a ball buster bringing it up, but man it held.

If I ever get another boat that is the anchor I will be looking for to be sure. Definitely going to smaller chain though. lol.

Never used a box anchor on the coast but they are dead solid on the lakes for anchoring. I would assume they will be just as effective in the bays. If heavy enough they will dig right in and hold.. I got 23 ft Robalo and have no problems anchoring. Sometimes I use two of them to keep the boat from swaying.

Got back yesterday, final report is: box anchor held in grass with a 10 ft rode tied to the side of the boat up to about 16 mph. On Wednesday the wind was 18-23 mph and had to use 20 ft of rode and tie that to starboard bow cleat.

The down side was storage and rust on the feet. I can't imagine any paint will survive sand and shell. I'm going to keep using it and rig a mount so I don't get rust stains on the deck.

PS retrieval was easier than expected, easier than the big Danforth.

The 150 dollar ones that overton's sell are and they also fold up and have a sack to put them in.

You may not want to spend that much but by all means have it galvanized.

I had both of my box anchors made by a guy on the forum from Lewisville. They are collapsible not sure about rust proof though.

I'm a miser and don't want to spend money if I can help it. How much does galvanizing cost roughly?

What about hard powder coating, would that work?

This may be a good excuse to buy a TIG welder and learn how to weld stainless.
