I am new to Texas, but a fairly experienced crappie fisherman. I have my own boat and gear, I just need to know where is a good place to plan a trip. I will have my wife and two younger kids with me, so it can't be 100 miles from something for them to do. I would like to stay in a cabin or rent a house. Thanks for the help.

Pick a lake. Look on VRBO for a rental.
If you stick close to metro mess you could probably get a local to show you around.

I am biased but I would take them to East Texas. For things to do ... the wife maybe Tyler TX and Canton if you can time it on trading days. The kids, fishing, kayaks, water parks. I Think Lake Fork or Palestine are close to Tyler. If you want deep east Texas, Rayburn or Toledo Bend. If you think Rayburn PM me for a place to stay I know of a couple I have stayed at.

Caddo, lake o the pines, texoma, and cedar creek are all good crappie lakes that I can think of that would have rent houses or cabins to stay at near them. There are a lot of other good lakes too, honestly I would head east due to lack of water in most dfw and west texas lakes.

Waco has cabins at Speegleville Marina and the Lake is full. Now go find them Crappie there about 15 to 20 ft. deep I am new to Texas, but a fairly experienced crappie fisherman. Don't know if this qualifies but here's what I'd do.
Stay at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine (kids will get a kick out of it). Go to Fort Worth and visit a world class museum like the Kimball, take in a Ranger Game in Arlington, go see Jerry Jones Stadium, take the kids to Six Flags, send the wife to the Galleria in Dallas and book a fishing trip with bigcrappie.com on Cedar Creek with Chuck Rollins.
Maybe you prefer the lakeside cabin idea instead. I don't know West Texas very well so just throwing out a little information about the DFW area.

Are you going on a fishing trip or get away? Grapevine is the get away but not the fishing trip, unless you want to go sand bass fishing, so I am told. There are some closer lakes to Grapevine than Cedar Creek. Lavon, Ray Roberts, Lewisville, just to name a few. Every one has crappie, just have to find them. Almost all of them have good crappie guides on them. That way you can fish and spend more time with the family.
