Sad story from my home lake this evening. Texas country singer Josh Ward and his partner were involved in a boat accident by pappas while fishing the weekly conroebass.com tournament. Josh's wife announced that he is doing ok, possible internal injuries and possible broken arm, but awake and coherent. His partner Andrew is ok as well. However several people on the other boat were not ok including one fatality. Keep them all in your prayers.

Oh dang, I'm glad we didn't fish the tournament last night. That sucks. I knew there was gonna be some incidents on the lake this week but it is getting started early already. There is no way I would get on Conroe starting Thursday, especially to try to fish. Prayers for everyone involved

Yikes. Prayers sent. I'm fishing in my 'Hood early, staying away from main lake/south too.

Prayers up for all involved.

It's hard to understand why TP&W, DPS or Montgomery Co. hasn't gotten a handle on the yahoo's on Conroe. Year after year its the same old story during the warmer months with the pleasure boaters/watercraft making all but the northern most parts of the lake unsafe for everybody on the lake. For me its not even about fishing Conroe during this time of year (I gave up on fair weather fishing Conroe many years ago), but year after year the kids in their daddy's Scarabs, Eliminators, Shockwaves and every other type of speed/pleasure boat imaginable have literally taken over the lake and made it more of a hazard than anything else. Boaters with little to no experience on the water don't stand a chance on the southern end after the open end of the lake gets all churned up due to the bowl effect, never mind the people who have years of experience on the water. Its a damned shame that the powers that be have allowed the outlaws in speed boats to continue the dangerous games they play on such a publicly utilized body of water.

Rant over.

Agreed, I try not to sound like a sour old fisherman at 24, but these people get outta control and downright dangerous. Out on daddys boat. This time of year I basically stay north of stowaway or up into lake paula. My boat may be old but she's mine and I'd like her to live longer for me and not fight any ski boats. I genuinly feel sorry for the people with kids on the lake.

Sad thing here....it sounds like it was the fishermans fault....not the pleasure boaters.

Everyone needs to slow their roll. Stay safe this weekend ya'll!

Perhaps we should hold off assigning blame until the investigation is complete.

The operator of the Skeeter is a good friend of mine. He and Josh are both very experienced and safe boaters. I wasn't there and don't know exactly what happened other than what has been reported. If I were a betting man, I'd guess the pleasure boat had no lights on, but that's only because I know how safe the Skeeter owner is.

I spoke to him by text a bit ago and they are both banged up but ok. Physically.

Prayers for all the families touched by this tragedy.

The Ranch here in the metroplex played a clip from a deputy who said the guys in the bass boat didn't see any lights on the pleasure boat & tried to avoid hitting it at the last second but couldn't avoid it.

Initial reports are saying the pleasure craft was operating without required lights. Regardless, such a tragedy!

Regardless of who was at fault....could you imagine being in a boat at night with your spouse, a couple of friends, and 4 children when all of a sudden you see a speeding boat coming right at you? That and the aftermath is a boater's nightmare. Lives were drastically changed and my sincere prayers for the hurting hearts, lives, and bodies involved.

What a sad situation. No matter who is at fault, there are 8 survivors that are going to have to live with the memory of this tragedy. Not to mention, there are a couple of adults that will have to live with the guilt of being involved directly in an accident that took 2 people too early from this world. I hate to see any accident, but I certainly hate to see accidents involving bass boats. It gives us all a black eye of sorts.

Prayers for everyone involved and their families.

Most of us could end up in the same situation running on plane after dark trusting other boaters are using their lights and operating safely when in fact they don't. High speed after dark is gamble it's time to slow it down

This is a bad bad deal. The 9 year old boy that was on the boat that had to be life flighted has since passed away as well. The investigation will come out and until then everything else is speculation. I went to high school with Josh and he is a good guy. I am sad for everyone involved in this terrible tragedy. Prayers sent for sure!

http://www.khou.com/news/local/2-boats-collide-on-Lake-Conroe-several-people-injured-265479291.html

KHOU is now reporting that one of the children died this morning as well. What an absolute tragedy. I can't fathom what any of these poor people are feeling right now...on either boat.

I really do hope all the BS speculation stops, though. Tired of reading it on all the blogs, forums, social media and even having to listen to it at our local BBQ shed. None of us were there when it actually happened and even the news is reporting speculation as fact. There is a pretty intense investigation going on right now and I'm sure they will be able to answer all of the who, what and where's. Blaming either boat right now is pointless and I'm more concerned about them finding that other woman and making sure everyone else involved gets physically healed as fast as possible.

Sad deal. Lots of people impacted very negatively. A tragedy regardless of who was at fault.

Only good thing that can come out of this if it makes all of us think more about what we are doing.

It is amazing how many just "assume" that it is a large, over powered pleasure boaters fault. Reading the story, one of the boats is a bass boat and the other a Mariah deck type boat probably about 24 feet long. I am not an expert on Mariah boats, but it is definitely a single engine I/O setup with either a 5.0 or 5.7 normally aspirated motor with a max speed of maybe 55. I have owned two boats for years. I just sold my 2011 Nitro Z9 and are about to order a new Ranger. My other boat: A 42' Nordic Inferno with 1650+ horsepower. And guess what, I run both on Lake Conroe majority of the time!

Bottom line, boat wrecks happen just as do car wrecks. Some are due to speed, alcohol, overall inexperience, or just a complete freak of nature. It can happen to all of us and as in this case is a life changing event. EVERYBODY needs to pay attention and drive defensively regardless of the type or horsepower of their boat. I can run my 42' at 90 mph just as confidently as a 20' bass boat at 75mph. (In fact, I feel safer in the 42' at 90 mph.) But, I could be in a crash all the same if I fail to see the guy not paying attention just around the bend or encounter that "floater" just under the surface pushed down from the river after a recent hard rain. Just be careful, we all want to be able to go home to our families at the end of the day regardless of our toy of choice.

Prayers sent to those involved. I cannot even fathom this happening to us with my kids in the boat regardless of whose fault it was. You might as well let me go under as well because I am not sure I would be able to handle it.

Rant over.

Ever see bass boats running 80 mph from one spot to another? I guess since we fish, every one else is just out there in our way? They pay their fees and have the same rights as we do.

Prayers up. This could happen to any one. About three weeks ago at 11:30 on a Thursday my partner and I were going from papa's to April sound and we were doing about 50-55 in a z21 ranger my partner felt we were far enough into the main lake and started turning left to go around the point, out of nowhere a pontoon boat apeared in front of us with no lights on! He pulled hard left and we missed it by 15 yards and got real sketchy when we jumped their wake. Not a good deal. There is alot of light reflecting of the water and made it almost impossible to see until too late. We weren't running WOT and our heads are constantly on a swivel and it almost happened to us in almost the same spot. In the summer we will only fish Conroe at night. The lord was watching over us that night

You'll notice I made no presumption of culpability concerning the terrible tragedy which occurred the other night on Conroe, It may take several more days before all the contributing factors have been determined in this incident.

However, hearing about this tragedy did spur a general comment regarding boat safety on Conroe in which some of the operators of power boaters (yahoo's/outlaws) have chosen to conduct their activities on the lake over the past many years. Anyone who has any familiarity with Conroe knows exactly what I'm talking about and I can only assume that you do as well. As a responsible boat operator on Conroe I can also assume you do not fall into the category which I describe and have no problem either relating to the current situation on the lake or posing in a defensive posture as a result of my comments.

I suppose this is one way of looking at it, providing you are unable to distinguish the difference between responsible boater safety and recklessness.

First this is a terrible, terrible accident. There is no blame to be pointed at this moment because 3 people lost their lives and everyone else included in this accident will forever be changed.

Now on to Grangerland.

You do know that 1/2hr after sunset you may only operate your boat at a minimum plane speed? Your recall of a similar event is no different minus a accident. Both you and the pontoon were not obeying the law.

Lake Conroe at night is tough to navigate. The shoreline house lights wash out any signal or light from a boat until you are close to them. I have had a few close calls myself both with pleasure and bass boats. I hope at the least everyone learns something from this and follows guidelines and laws much closer.

Sktr#22 great post.

There is one thing that all my years or riding motorcycles at night has taught me. Never out run your headlight. My boat does not have headlights so night running is a slow and cautious ride. With the wide screen color tv's we put on our boats now(yes I do have one at the console) put out alot of light your eyes adjust to it. Then when you look up for a moment things just dissappear until your eyes adjust to the dark. All human eyes do this. I personally turn mine off and use my old 1240a blue water pro flasher yep old school lawrance way less intrusive light. One last thing yet it is the hardest you do not have to run a boat at WOT period just had this discussion with my son. His first response was yes I do. I looked him square in the eyes and said no you don't that is when the light bulb went off in his head you could see it in his face.

You are just plain wrong. Off the mark. Out in left field. I live on the lake. Right down from one of the largest marinas. We often sit on the dock at night and talk. The night fishermen never use minimum planing speed. Always going at least 30-40 or more. Not saying they are WOT, but going way too fast for dark. IMO they think they know the lake so well they feel they are safe boaters. But if you can't see what's in front of you, how is it safe to go fast? And the report says they came from around a corner. Lights or no lights on the pleasure boat, apparently they were speeding into a blind spot.

You don't know the facts. Performance boat owner/drivers, as a class, are the safest out there. I cannot even get my Fountain to stay on plane below about 25 MPH, so if out at night too bad we idle home just glad Lake Conroe is not too big. As my post above says, as a class, I would say hands down the most dangerous boater on Lake Conroe is a bass boater. Small, light, overpowered and overconfident, they never use minimun planing speed at night when they pass my house. Never.

Thread is getting way off target. Regardless of circumstance it was a horrible tragedy and that's the real story.

I am horrified at what happened on Lake Conroe. The pictures of these boats make me ill and knowing people were gravely injured cuts me to the quick. Just not going to comment about any of the details. A lot of professionals are assessing the situation and the full details will be out soon.

The lakes around the hill country are just not crowded at all after dark. It is rare to see any other boats on the water after 10 PM. I guess I am the stupid one for being out on the lake. The fishing is so good at night, I just can't resist. Even so, I only run at the slowest speed my boat will plane. That is right at 25-28 MPH for my boat. I watched the entire interview of the constable and the prosecutor. They stated there is a speed limit on lakes after dark. I never really knew there was an official speed limit--speed at which the boat will plane--after dark. Learn something new everyday.

I use the brightest anchor light I could find (LED) and have the biggest navigation lights that I could find. I am pretty bright on the water because I know how background lights around the lakes can cause you not to be seen. I wish I could find bigger nav lights that would work for my boat. I am also considering installing LED strip lights.

This should give us all a moment of pause. It sure has made me think about what I am doing and take nothing for granted.

Please don't misunderstand me. This was a terrible, needless and preventable loss of lives. Get the word around that night boating and fishing (have fished all my life as well as performance boater)is dangerous. At captains meetings, weigh ins and parties there should always be safety announcements. Agree with above. Big lights at night. Pulls the fish anyway.

While I appreciate your three posts since this incident happened I think you may be off base. Almost all boating accidents happen on the south end of this lake...for a variety of reasons: To many shoreline lights, Navigational lights not on, Unsafe speeds, alcohol (which isn't a factor in this case), The list goes on.

I'm no investigator and do not want to presume anything...but if both boats were on a plane, which they were, then the bass boat would be looking at the green navigational light on the deck boat in this case. The deck boat would be looking at the red light on the bass boat.. This means by navigational law the deck boat would have to yeild right of way to the bass boat. So if were going to talk about plaining laws....then we need to talk about navigational laws too. Sad thing is that most people don't even know why one light is green and one is red on the front of boats.

This is a terrible tragedy...no one knows how fast people were going except the drivers of both vessels. To say one class of driver is better than the other because of what kind of boat they drive is assinine. Experience on the water is what really matters.

So you joined the forum just yesterday to come on here and point fingers. I think the thing that we all need to remember is that 3 people lost their lives and many others were changed forever. Why can't we let the authorities do their jobs and just shut our mouths. Remember this could've happened to any one of us on here no matter how much experience you think you have or how careful you are on the water. Point is just take your time on the water and be aware of others.

Joined the forum for two reasons. To lurk a little and pick up on some fishing tips and to respond to misinformation in a misleading post regarding what seems like basic prejudice toward "those damn go fast boaters". I got here by a link from another forum and this looks like a great web site, so I joined.

First off, I fish and I go fast. I have both types of boat. I have taken several safety courses the most recent Tres Martin's driving course right here on Lake Conroe which was thorough and complete regarding driving theory and basic safety. How many of you guys have taken a formal driving safety course?? Instead of a war between whatever type of boat or boater you like or don't like, take a look at yourself and others and their driving habits. Do you speed at night? Do you think its OK when others do? We are constantly amazed at the BASS BOATS that speed past our waterfront house in the dead of the night. The pleasure boaters or runabouts are almost always going very slow but yes there are some exceptions. We rarely see performance type boats out at night. Since fishing tournements are competetive it builds up a competetive drive. I know this too from performance boating but like driving a car I slow down to meet conditions. My own personal observations from my boat dock are that bass boaters go the fastest at night of all types of boats that pass my house.

I understand what you are saying and I do agree that there are many bass fisherman that drive way too fast at night, I myself am not one of those but that doesn't mean that something tragic couldn't happen to me. If I directed my comment directly at you I'm sorry, it was for everybody that was assuming they knew what happened and knew who to blame. We should all direct our concern towards the family's affected and try to do our best not to let it happen to us or somebody we know.
