A group of us paddled the Nature Reserve in Ft Worth a few weeks ago. Almost everyone that we encountered were in Pelicans, each appeared to be having such a nice time that I didn't have the heart to tell them how unfavorably their kayaks are viewed, in the forums. laugh

Any boat that can safely gets you on the water and fills most, if not all of your needs, is a good boat. If you get to a point that you are ready for something larger/faster/better...... you can always get another boat. I would however periodically check craigslist list, because bargains are out there. Good luck

You can read what others think about a particular kayak here:

I think a lot of people buy cheap because they are not that serious either about fishing or kayaking and just want to try it out. And cheap is fine for a pond I would think. I would worry about quality a whole lot more if you were seriously going to pursue kayak fishing and plan on spending a lot of time on the lake. My first kayak is probably going to be a cheap one but I can't afford a nice one and I will spend my time on ponds with it anyway. For now I got a inflatable one for free and I took it out the other day and it did ok on the pond I was fishing but I want a real kayak still......not sure I like paddling a MAYPOP kayak rolfmao

Here is a link to my post in the inflatable the other day.

There is no right answer, it depends on your spending philosophy.

length will depend on your weight... longer usually means more weight capacity. 10 or 12 ft

BPS has Ascend kayaks that are very reasonable. Not top of the line of course but would be
good for the pond fishing you want to do.

My first Kayak was purchased last fall and it was the Pescador 12 as mentioned from Academy. My original plan was to purchase this one and make sure i liked kayaking first then if the itch was still there i could rig it up for more serious fishing. Unfortunately I was hooked instantly and did some moderate rigging of it then made the mistake of going to the meetup at lake grapevine last year and saw all of the other models and what could be done to those bad boys as far as rigging. So now my plan is to slowly and without her knowledge get my wife hooked on kayaking and furthermore inlove with my pescador so that i may make the sacrifice of buying a little more substantial model. We are borrowing a friends pelican to go on a central texas kayak trip next week where i will take my plan to the next level.
So Long Story short, the Pescador is an excellent beginning kayak BUT it is also a gateway drug.

See my earlier post about my never-used Jackson 14. That will give you a permanent 'fix' to your new habit!

Im just saying here...
To me it doesnt make much sence to spend 3-400 on a cheepo yak if you have intrest in the sport. With a quality boat you can expand to the lakes and rivers. Id look for a used yak that is higher end. Ive seen a lot of good ones between 5-700. I just cant see spending a couple/few hundred less for a boat that may not properly fit your needs when if you save a little longer you can get true quality. The resale of most kayaks is very good.
