I have a new boat and would like to add a fish finder that has side imaging capability as well as GPS. I am looking to spend $1000 or less. Does anyone have any good recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

I would look at a Humminbird unit. No extra structure scan boxes and cables. Guy here at work put a 1199 on his Nitro and I really like it. I run 2 Lowrance units on my Basscat but thinking of swapping over to Humminbird units.

Humminbird 998 new in box at academy in lewisville right now for $999 or step down to a smaller screen and get a 698 for about $650 I recommend the larger screen for the side image it's a lot clearer than the smaller screens

Is there a difference in quality of the scan or transducer between the 998 and 698 or just the screen size?
How come I keep catching small fish when every product I buy is supposed to catch more and bigger fish?

If your thinking about going to a 698 then save yourself some money and go 598 si they are the same as far as specs and screen size and transducer. go to Acadmey they have them at 549.00 the 698si is 699.00 3 weeks ago acadmey had the 598si down to 449.00 thats when I got mine. but check out humminbird website you can see the specs for yourself, the 598 is in the closeout section. and I think that is the reason because there the same as the 698

Lowrance HDS7 Touch should be arriving today. This thing looks amazing. I'm gonna grab the Motorguide xi5 and pair them up. The TR will hold the GPS coordinate of the Lowrance waypoints.

Recently switched over to a Garmin Echomap 70DV with Chirp scanning. WOW!!!! Outstanding clarity and ease of use. Been a Lowrance man all my life but this could be a good move for me!!!

The 698 has a narrower display which is what you do not want in a unit that does side imaging. The 598 and 798 have the same display size. In all cases, a wider display is preferable for side imaging. 500 and 700 series is better than a 600 series 800 series is better than a 500 and 700 series 900 serice is better than a 800 series 1100 series is better than a 900 series. BIGGER is better

Humminbird 999 will go for 1200 if you can find them.

I recently purchased a H-bird 899SI HD combo from David at Shut-up-and-fish here on TFF with a lakemaster 2014 new version card for about 1100.00 dollars and I couldn't be happier. David was easy to deal with and talk to, just my 2 cents

I've had several Lowrance and Hummingbird units over the years. The Hummingbirds all worked until obsolete. Lowrance were replaced because something quit working and they no longer supported the model. I have two Lowrance now and when they quit, I am going Hummingbird. Still a matter of personal preference overall. Dodge or Chevy...
