I went to texoma couple of times, bank fishing for stripers. I saw lots lots Buffalo and gars swimming along the shore line. I would like to catch Buffalos and gars to show off. Haha, you all know the drill.

First, i dont know if my 8 weight TFO BVK would be strong enough to handle 10#, 15# Buffalos or gars?

Second, what type of flies are good for buffalos and gars?

Thanks.

An 8 weight would handle twice that weight of fish. Just make sure you don't horse in the fish. Also give the fish time to recover before releasing the fish. They do build up a lot of lactic acid in their tissue and need some recovery time before they can swim off.

I landed this guy with a 5 wt tfo bvk so your 8 should have plenty of backbone. Fishing for Buffalo I use the same thing I use for carp. As far as fly selection for gar they chase just about anything down. The hard part is to get a hook in them and to keep the teeth from cutting your line. Don't expect much of a fight after the hook set. They seem to save the energy to beat you up on land hah
