Hi folks,

I know this is largely a subjective question, but what kind of gas usage should I expect from my 2001 Yahama 115? It's carbureted, with direct oil injection, pushing a 1,350-lb center console boat + passengers. Is it going to suck my 52-gallon tank dry with moderate cruising?

I'll be using Yamalube, with Ring Free ... any particular fuel I should use? Do these engines prefer regular gas, or the higher octane stuff?

Thanks,
John

Yamaha recommends regular unleaded. You're probably going to top out at about 3-1/2 to 4 mpg. Your best cruising rpm will normally be between 3000 and 4000 rpm. Without Fuel Scan equipment, you will have to pay close attention to fuel usage to determine what speed is most efficient.

Thanks -- I hope to get the fuel scan set up eventually once I get a higher end sonar/gps. I do have the digital dash with a fuel gauge, so at least I can see when I am getting low.

Gallons per hour is a better way to measure fuel usage.

On that motor figure around 12 GPH at full throttle. Much better at cruising speed.

I have that motor on a 2004 19 foot baystealth. Gets around 3MPG cruising at 4000RPM. I've used the cheap citgo oil and cheapest diamond shamrock gas since day one. I do a seafoam shock treatment once a year. Starts on the second crank every time. Even if its been sitting for a couple months.

i have that motor (03) on a little lighter boat than you have(probably alot lighter) and i can run all weekend on one 25 gallon tank. i've run 2 full days on amistad on one tank. its real good as long as you cruise at about 3500 rpm. 87 octane. stay with yamalube. you can save your yamalube oil jugs and have them refilled at most marine shops from their bulk tanks for cheaper. but it doesn't use that much oil anyway.

Thanks -- I guess I'll drop 25 gallons in it for a start. This weekend is just a shakedown cruise, and Canyon Lake is not that big. I need to pick up some Ring Free tomorrow too.
