I have both one 175 hp Merc 2 cycle on my bass boat and a 130 hp Honda on our pontoon. The four cycle is soooo much quieter then the Merc. BUT you have to change the oil in it and several oter things that I have the shop at Ray Bob every spring.
The Merc. I just keep the oil tank full and have the shop guys go over it every two years (change both lower unit oil every year).
But I prefer the Honda, it is smoother, quieter, and idles sooo nice. Both have alwasy srarted right up, never any problems there.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Honda.
One thing is a four is ususlly heavyer then a 2 cycle, but if the boat can handle it I wouldn't care.

I believe the Honda is a great motor for a lot of applications. It is no speed demon, but is quite and reliable.

I would want to be comfortable with my dealer. Just remember, there is not a Honda Marine dealer in every town or around every lake or harbor. This could be a problem if you travel around much.

I have a merc 40 2 stroke and a merc 60 4 stroke. I love the 4 stroke. It's quiet and starts with a bump of the key.

From what I hear Hondas are as good or better.

I've got a Honda 150 and really like it but a lot depends on your application. What kind of boat?

a 4 Stroke needs to be on a boat that can handle some more weight on the back. (dont put a 4 stroke on a bass boat). but they will run quieter and better than a 2 stroke.
