Always have a smoke grub rigged up. I go to Canada every year and it is a smallmouth killer!

I found a massive stockpile of old new stock on eBay. Got a bunch in avocado since my 30 year old stash of smoke grubs is dwindling. I should be good to go for a few more years. There were plenty of metal flake versions like you describe still available though.

Yes sir still use grubs. I have a spinnerbait tied on 12 months out of the year. Typically it will have a grub trailer. Either large single tail or split tail.

I was using what we called at the time a spade tail grub in the early 80's made by Master Minnow, the only difference is now they call them swimbaits.

Catch every species on grubs - many that I modify:
Crappie Magnet :

They catch fish on a Beetle Spin:

...use curl tail grub on Beetle Spin also:

Added part of a Sweet Beaver to a grub body:

Take the claw from a craw lure and add it to a grub body:

Fuse two grub bodies minus curl tails and wacky rig or the usual way:

Hand injected mold produces this thin tail grub:

Spike tails do well:

Bunt tail grubs always catch fish:

Use cheap unpainted ball head jigs from ebay. 1/16 oz usually does it though at times I use a 1/32 oz or 1/24 oz. Hook sizes #6, #4.
Grub color not important - action and size crucial. I've caught 7lb catfish and 3 lb bass on them. As with any small lure I find that
a slow unsteady retrieve is best.

Yes, winter thru early spring... If you catch a few in one spot follow up with the Ned Rig or visa versa... Dan

Anyone else go out yesterday? I was surprised to see the water temperature at 52 degrees. Caught three (one small one 9", 1 1/2 lbs, 2 1/2 lbs.). Crankbait in 3 - 5' of water on points coming from deep water.

Many years canoeing/fishing rivers in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The Brazos, Llano, Guadalupe, Devils, Ouachita, Illinois, Mountain Fork, Buffalo....All had one thing in common: hands down the best lure for all the rivers I’ve fished has been a curly tailed grub on a jig head. More fish caught on this lure than all other river lures combined. Any color......as long as it’s chartreuse! [Linked Image]
