A little warm weather would probably help...I need a Canyon trip soon. Report...even if not a lot of success!

Was out there today. Water 53 and some staining around Cranes Mill point. Parked on a huge group of fish per my old Hummingbird 365i, and we couldnt jig them in, troll them in, or topwater them in. Just west of #7. Sad....

That might have been a school of longnose gar. Canyon Lake has tons of them. They like to ball up in the winter/early spring in the upper portion of the lake.

Really? Thats interesting. Thanks. And they dont go for any kind of lures?
One thing was great is that there were loons out on the lake yesterday. Heard their calls everywhere. One dove underwater and came up what seemed over a hundred feet away. Its so great when the lake is empty of rec boaters!

About 7-8 years ago, I helped the TPWD boys set gillnets in Canyon Lake. We needed to catch striped bass for research purposes. We graphed a large wad of fish near Cranes Mill point. We set out our nets with high hopes. The next day was a disaster. The entire 200' net was nothing but longnose gar from end to end. What a stinking mess. I have set hundreds of gillnets in my day, but I have never seen a gillnet with that many gar.
