Found a 6500B in really good shape...I can get it for 30$...are they good reels for the surf or what?..any opinions appreciated.

I have a Shimano Thunnas...HD Baitrunner spinning reel and it can handle just about anything. Mine has some years on it but has held up well.

That's a few generations old, as far as I know.
That said, I have an 8000D which I have abused as both a surf and offshore reel and it has held up great. I had to send it in for service due to sand/gear incompatibility, but that's the cost of surf fishing with an unsealed reel.
