which pier in Corpus - 04/22/15 07:09 PM

Going to Corpus in mid May, looking at a pier to hit in that area. I see there is a pier on N.Padre called Bob Hall pier, are there trout in the beach front in mid May down there? Also see Red Dot pier and Indian Point pier. If anyone has good info on these piers please let me know what you would suggest.

Already have a hotel on the beach in Corpus, so driving to Port Aransas, Rockport, Baffin Bay aint happening, so sayeth the wife. Just a weekend getaway, but I cant be that close to the water and not have a line in it, at least for a few hours.

Plan on soaking live shrimp. Plus maybe some finger mullet on bottom and see if a red may be out there. Not wanting to feed the hardheads to much. Probably have 1 pole rigged to throw out some soft plastics. I grew up fishing Galveston/ Surfside areas and still do a few times a year, have never been to, or fished Corpus. Any tips or advise is much appreciated.

I would head to Red Dot to target reds and black drum. May want to pick up some sea lice or mantis shrimp as well for bait for black drum. Your set ups would work for Packery Channel jetties too.

If you plan on throwing soft plastics use your lighter setup. The classic Spec Rigs work well and are cheap to pick up. As are DA Shrimp. Yo-Zuri 3DS Minnows are great for trout under the lights, but are a bit pricey.

I limited out under the lights over at Riviera using Gulp mud minnow soft plastics in the nuclear chicken color.

No offense to people who target black drum, but I dont fish for them. I've caught them unintentionally and would give them to anyone that wanted to eat em. Same goes for sheepheads, just dont want the hassle of cleaning them. Specs, reds and flounder is what I mainly aim for.

Thanks for the tips.

Are the packery channel jetties flat topped so I can pull my cart on it?

Riviera pier is on Baffin south of Corpus on US77.

Yes, Packery jetties have a paved sidewalk and hand rails running down the middle of them.

Howdy W-H. The question about Riviera was already answered. My post was more about the bait to use than where to fish. As mentioned, I have had real good luck with the nuclear chicken colored Gulp. Have you ever heard of Kings Inn? Best seafood in the area -- served family style where you get fried shrimp, oysters, etc by the pound (closed on Sunday and Monday though). It's right by the water off of FM 628 about 8 miles east of Highway 77. Turnoff from 77 to 628 is about 8 or 10 miles south of Kingsville. About a mile south of Kings Inn there is a public park (Kaufer-Hubert Memorial) and pier. Worth the trip to eat at Kings Inn no matter how many fish you might end up catching.

Thanks Gato, yea the wife and I are always up for suggestions about where to chow on good grub in different towns (especially good seafood). Will look it up for sure. Thanks again. Kings Inn may be the spot to grab a bite before we get to the hotel

Just an FYI, the Kings Inn is about an hour drive south of Corpus Christi. I'm assuming you're driving down from Katy.

Any good reports coming from piers in the bay or north padre surf? Has the storms made the water bad for specs? Going there this weekend. Hopefully storms will stay away and water isnt to dirty.
