finally tried the salt…

finally tried the salt… - 09/12/13 06:15 AM

A couple of weeks ago I made a post about giving the salt a try for the first time and asked for advice. Just a couple of days ago I finally made a saltwater fishing trip for the first time. At first, both my buddy and I fished from the shore with topwaters but had no luck. We did see such a big school of mullets and a couple of ladyfish flying out of the water but didnt catch a single fish. We then decided to go try fishing at a pier which was close by. We went and spoke to man that was fishing there. He told us to buy shrimp and give it a try. That's exactly what we did and ended up catching a good amount of fish. Probably about 20 altogether. I had 2 small reds, and both my buddy and I caught many black drums and ladyfish. He, my buddy, also caught what he called a saltwater perch, I dont know exactly what it is called though. Anyways, he thought the ladyfish would make for good bait but since we are new we aren't sure. So can we keep ladyfish and use it as cut bait? Or am I better using a cast net to get some mullet. How about shrimp, should I just stick to the shrimp?

Thanks

Sounds like a good day to me. what location are you fishing?

To answer your question, yes you can use lady fish as bait. there was a recent post(see link) in which he used lady fish as bait.

Also cast net for mullet. That is my favorite bait for big redfish.
the smaller mullet also make great trout bait as well.

I was fishing in a pier near kings inn. I believe it is a restaurant or hotel, not sure…
I went last night again, and while my buddy and I did not catch many different fish nor many fish at all, we cought a couple of black drums that were a bit better in size than the first time we went!

lady fish cut is just as good as mullet, but u can hid a hook better in mullet, catching mullet is easier than catching lady fish, live lining finger mullet is awsome cus only big fish will eat in and usually no catfish, u cant live line lady fish cus theyll die and ususaly there a little too long to use whole

The first time my buddy and I ever went there, there was little to no water at all. We did however see dozens and dozens and dozens of mullet and thought about maybe bringing a cast net haha. The last time we went there, the water was alot higher. How do we know when it is draining? It should be when it is going down right?

And yeah I know about that restaurant, I just don't know know how many pounds of whatever it is I'm getting to get haha. You have to get everything by weight!

if the mullet r there the trout r there also...watch the tides for baffin bay.wait for the high tide and fish the hours after as its dropping.the mullet will get sucked back into the bay and the trout will b waiting.easy pickins
