Skunked at Port A

Skunked at Port A - 06/27/20 03:01 PM

we were at a roofing deal on Thursday
Our guide took us to East Flats, we fished with croaker, in clear water, & cut mullets casted into grass, looking for reds.
Not even a sniff.
Is this normal ?

If your guide tried finding fish by fishing several areas and looking for them, then it was just one of those days. As long as the effort was made trying to find fish that is really all you can ask for and do . thumb

Side Note: At least you were able to get out on the water!

Talked with a few different groups of people fishing around the Port Aransas harbor on Friday. All reported poor fishing all over the area. One gentleman was of the opinion there was too much fresh water. Have heard of that in the bays before but I thought that the Port A harbor area had so much tidal influence from the Gulf?

What he said and

Some days are good, some days are bad, some days are so terrific that you will remember them for ever. If i am inshore I always have shrimp available. Something will almost always hit a shrimp. And I hate getting skunked.

I believe most of the influx from the Gulf in that area comes through the ship channel. On the other hand, there are several rivers between Corpus Christi and Port O'Connor that can dump a lot of fresh water into the bay system during heavy rainfall.

Nothing like hiring a guide and getting skunked, but that’s fishing. He should be working with other guides to spread out his odds over many areas. Some days they are there, other days they are elsewhere. But he’s got to at least take you to another area other than East flats, once it’s obvious they’re not there.

Generally speaking, I’d say that part of the bay is tough this time of year with all the cumulative pressure you’re getting. Also, I’d tend to want to focus on deeper water this time of year with any kind of current (water or wind). It seems like the trout have been holding in deeper water than usual for this time of year as most of my trout i’ve been catching are 3’+

That is unfortunate. Wade fished fairly close to your area (east shore CC bay) at a drive up location. Usually only keep couple of trout, like them to be over over 16", released 3-4 legal but not to that length. Released 2-3 reds close to minimum. [Linked Image]
.

Fished 7:30 to 10:30, had to pull a young man out of the slop just after sunrise.
