Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 02/04/12 02:24 AM

I have been wanting to know the same question. Wish it left a few hours earlier, but I think I might try it out sometime. I know Deep Sea Headquarters used to run the 12hr night trips on Saturdays, but they stopped. Dolphin Docks runs night trips only during the summer season from 6 to 6.
Would much prefer to go with Deep Sea if they still offered them.

Yes, great time to go offshore. From the trips I've seen, they are actually more productive. Have caught everything from black fin tuna to amberjack and the standard reef fish.

Best thing, NO sun burn!

I called Fisherman's Wharf today and they said that they usually do not fill enough spots on the 12 hour night trips outside of summer.
Even for spring break the guy sounded doubtfull, but he said you never know. They need to fill at least 20 spots for it to go out.
Must be a great deal to go out for 100 dollars if you can get on with only 20 people. I remember going out in the summer years ago during the day, and the boat was very crowded. Kind of makes me want to go out more this time of year.

Fishermans wharf 12hr - is a good offshore offshore trip and
they use electric reels and have sometimes put drift baits off
the back while other fish on bottom with electric reels or manual(depends) It is a great boat to go on,You need to make
sure that there is enough folks to go. This time of the year
the 12hr does not make it out due to lack of fishermen.
If, you can make the Scat Cat or Wharf Cat it will be a
great ride and to have a good time offshore fishing.

Old topic, new post. I signed up today for one the 23rd. I've never been out with Fishermans wharf before and want to know if there is any big difference in between their boats and DSH. I know they are slower and smoother ride, but policy wise what can I expect? Also any tips for fishing techniques at night beside glow jigs?

went out on the 6am to 6pm one a couple months ago and killed the fish there was only about 25 people on the whole boat so it was awesome, make sure if you want to catch anyhting but snapper you get to the back of the boat first otherwise theres no chance at getting a king because the line is so long

I bring my own gear so I don't depend on the boat, plus its a night trip and kings aren't as active i've been told.

You have me curious.

Scat Cat is a wide double hull, rides better than single
hull,a/c inside, consession person inside to sell drinks
and microwaveable food, snacks and drinks, beer too.
My son calls it a floating Valero station on the GOM.
On the 12 hour on saturday night, it depends on the captain-
and sea situation - but, most the time they will anchor on
a rock where vermillion snapper are, snapper season will be
closed, depending on the current you can catch kings at
night, Scat Cat trips for the money are hard to beat even
if fishing is slow, you will have a great offshore fix.
Crew and captains are Great... Captain Russell and Justin
are both great.....Hope you have a Great Trip!

Tuna Texas, Has something happened that I haven't heard about? I though snapper went until July 10th ( plus or minus a day or so).

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/15/12 01:25 PM

Still does as far I can tell.

Dad and I went on a 12hr night trip once. I believe it was on the La Pesca, it has been a while. We thought it sounded cool to be heading out on the water as the sun went down. Not have the heat and sun baring down on you. Over rated! Personally I don't think the fishing is as good at night, between that and wasting the entire next day trying to catch up on your sleep that was our last night trip.

If it was a longer trip say to the Tuna grounds I think it would be a different story. For the 8-12hr trips I personally think day is the way to go. Might be worth doing once smile

You are Correct, My Bad, RED Snapper season is
now Cut off on July 10th, at this time, if you
fishing before this on the Scat Cat, you are on
a almost given Two Snapper,(per person) only thing
could mess that up would be a Real screaming current...
Looks like a good time ahead....

Go on a week day. I went once on the Scat Cat and it was the worst time ever... There was 90 people abaord if I recall right and one fish wrapped up half the boat. The crew was good and we caught a few fish, just make sure its not on a busy holiday or on a summer weekend. Also if you don't like the smell of smokes you will barely make it past the cash register as they chain smoke at the store.

Anyone know what it takes to call off a trip? Storms keep on moving around this week.

They'll wait right up to the last minute unless it's obvious that there's going to be a big blow for a while. I've been sitting on the Kingfisher before and they call the trip.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/18/12 06:30 AM

DSH calls their boats around 7 or 8 foot seas, what does Scatcat call it at??? I've heard they still run at 10'.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/20/12 09:17 PM

Scat Cat can handle 10ft seas, been on it in 10ft,
great boat, But, the captain running the boat will
make the call with several things he is looking at.
You will have to be ready to go, if he says its a go.
Hope it sails for you....

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/20/12 09:25 PM

Just checking this weekend, Offshore forecast
does not show anything that would slow down
Scat Cat...... 4ft-7ft is standard business
for Fishermans Wharf..... Just keep your sea
legs under you.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/21/12 12:51 AM

This weekend is looking good to me..... A window opened up Friday and Saturday, I saw 2-3 footers with 5-10kn wind. I'll fish that any day. Now if I can avoid elbow overdose at the rail.....This Monday they had 76 in the book. Anybody know if there's a such thing as garlic and onion soap?????? smile

I got a couple ideas up my sleeve for this trip, I'll share em if any of them work.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/24/12 05:57 PM

Just got off the island, and my verdict is I would only go on this trip again as a last option. Next year I'll take a couple days off work to go during the week. 77 people is way too many for my liking, plus I saw a few questionable things that I wasn't happy to see. I would go out again with Captain Russell but some of the deck hands need to brush up on current regulations.
I caught my snapper and couple bonus fish. Fought to the boat a 5' dusky shark and 6' sandbar. Saw a 38# snapper caught as well. Not a bad trip overall but not my favorite either.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/24/12 06:22 PM

Thanks for your report. I was once thinking of trying this trip, but not with anywhere around 77 people. I went with Deep Sea Headquarters last Wednesday and 38 was considered a full boat. Obviously a smaller boat, but I would still prefer to go with them.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/24/12 07:51 PM

Personally, I would prefer to save a little more money, grab a 4 or 5 of my buddies and go on a private charter. Much more enjoyable and not much more money.

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/25/12 01:23 PM

Wow a 38lb snapper! That is a lot of good eaten there!

I enjoy the hell out of taking my own boat. Towing, rigging, planning, etc it's all part of the fun and enjoyment of it. Maybe it isn't for everyone but it's money well spent as far as I'm concerned...

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/25/12 03:41 PM

Thanks for trip info: Huge Snapper hopefully they
check to see if it was over 38.13 as it would be
a New State Red Snapper record - I love to fish the
Scat Cat - Have fished it with 90 onboard, not the
way to go - Still if you are by yourself and need
an offshore fix and can catch the boat with 50 or
less it works for me Two nice sharks too -

Re: fishermans wharf night trip? - 06/25/12 04:03 PM

The sandbar surprised me. I got him to the boat with 80# mono leader. I thought it was a Grouper, figuring that a shark would have cut me off after 20 minutes. Brought him to the top for a couple minutes and right as the deckhand was trying to unhook it with the gaff he cut himself off.
I thought the record snapper was bigger than that. Now I kinda wished I stayed for the official weight. Captain Russell eyeballed it around 38#. I'll post a picture and see what you guys think it is.
