New Oral Cancer Data - Current Screening Tools - 07/24/20 04:07 PM

Hello TFF’ers,

I’ve been working on compiling some data for you on the ever-changing landscape of oral cancer. Even ten years ago, many of us still had a laser-like focus on tobacco usage and excess alcohol consumption. I work with a company, the makers of the VEL Scope, that has opened a lot of eyes regarding a new link to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and how it correlates to the spike in oral cancer we are currently seeing. There are a couple of videos I would like to post eventually but I want it as concise as possible to not bore you with too much dental-speak.

Here are some of the statistics I’ve compiled into a Power Point style presentation. Over fifty percent mortality rate at 5 years means that half of the people diagnosed five years ago will have died today from oral cancer which is an alarming number and is tied to the lack of diagnosis and proper screening. Take a look and let’s discuss as I get more information together over the coming months.

Thank you for putting this together. Very interesting and scary. Never heard of the Velscope. Is it common for dentists to have one? I’ve had an ENT and my dentist examine my mouth recently and both said eveything looked fine. But I am concerned of what they may not be able to see on the surface. I don’t have any problems, but constantly worry about every little feeling.

LFF,

You’re doing exactly right. In my experience, there’s no replacement for a good health history and clinical evaluation by trained eyes. The VELScope is just a tool to aid in the screening and eventual diagnosis.

It is getting more and more common for dentists to have one because of their utility but of course it all costs money.

I’d say you’re ahead of the curve on this deal so keep it up. thumb

Of course, Geeb, and I’ve got more coming.

What the HPV link means is that those with children reaching sexual maturity (way younger than most of us are thinking) you have to start thinking about screenings NOW to avoid being one of those tragic stories.

As TFF members, all of your cancer screenings will be complimentary so if you are anywhere near NE Texas and not getting screened, consider coming out.
