Short shaft motor/ Long transom

Ok I looked across the net to find material about mounting a short shaft motor 15”, to a 20” transom. I had people tell me it was possible, but no pictures and really not much info.
Sooooo.. I wanted to do a quick write-up saying it is indeed possible to do.

I took it to HydroDynamics down in Quitman and let Steve work his magic. He built a manual jack plate that would move the motor back about 6-1/2” and down a little over a inch.
Guys, I want to stop and tell you Steve knows his business and does a exemplary job of how to make a customer happy. The quality of the product, and the price of the work he did couldn’t be beat!
Anyway I have had it out fishing a couple times now and it is doing awesome. So it can be done and here are some pictures of before and after.

Good deal! I was thinking jack-plate as I began to read your dilemma.

I was thinking a PT-35 would of been better, if your motor doesn't have a tilt n trim that is. That and a stainless steel prop, you would probably pick up 3mph.

Can you lower a motor with the PT-35? I see the top plate has a angle going up so as to raise the motor.

Yes and no. Unlike a manual jack plate you can not twist a bolt to make the motor go vertically up or down. But you can mount it lower on the transom to the same effect (permenantly in place). I have done this many of times for similar situations as yours and even the opposite to raise the motor higher.

I had the revers problem; long shaft motor and short shaft transom. And since I'm a metal fab person, I just built up the transom with aluminum. I'm planning to take the wood out later and replace with aluminum channel and rectangular tubing. That should stiffen the transom up even more. And never have to worry about replacing the wood again.

The hole shot isn’t bad at all. Well.... for a 25 HP. LOL.. I’m pretty happy with the end result. I’ve had it out 7-8 times now and it performs very well. The motor does a great job and pushes the 16’ er around very well. Of course it would be nice to get a 50-60 hp and be able to go faster. But I will say the gas’s mileage on this 2000 Yamaha four stroke is crazy good. I filled the tank up and have made 4-5 trips. It’s a 6 gallon tank and it has only used about a inch of gas. :0 Crazy efficient, but I’m not complaining about saving money.

Yeah, Shaun: Those 4-stroke Yammies don't use much gas. I had a 15 on my inflatable in the Caribbean, and I thought I was gonna have to dump the gas due to old age!
I've got a 9.8 Merc 2-stroke on my current 14 foot flats skiff, and it uses more than a 4-stroke, but it still takes a while to drop the level on my 6-gallon tank. My skiff tops out at 15. Fast enough for me. Catch 'em up! IslandJim
