Christmas bay

I have a trip planned to surfside for spring break. I know its a long ways away but i like to be prepared. Anyone ever fish around that area? Any info on what to fish and were would be awsome. Only saltwater fishing ive done is off shore, so im clueless as to what ill need. Ill be fishing from a kayak.

I havent fished over there in a while but you are going to be targeting the big 3 any way you look at it. Redfish, speckeled trout, and flounder. Anything else is just bonus lol. I bring a castnet and catch bait before i head out. Run 2 poles on the back with live bait, 1 weighted and 1 free lined. Then i use my other pole for throwing artificials. You can also use cut bait for redfish / sharks. Dead shrimp will catch all sorts of stuff but usually not speckeled trout. Live shrimp will catch anything. Its always good to try out a few different baits to see what they are eating.

If you are fishing in a kayak I suggest you launch at ernies (seacost dr) paddle east towards Churchhill bayou and stake out at the mouth on the north side. cast a popping cork with live shrimp or some gulp and let the current take the cork out along the channel. pop the cork as hard as you can about every 5-8 sec. you should make a killing on the trout. by nine, move into the marsh for some reds.

The trick is you have to be set at the mouth before sun up. if you launch at sun up you'll be too late when you get there.

Try the surf. Surf fishing is always good at Surfside all the way down to San Luis Pass.

I plan on fishing the surf and jetties. But im not real sure on how to fish them ether. ive got alot of pyramid sinkers from 1oz to 5oz will they work for the surf? figured id use a fish finder rig surf fishing? not real sure about the jetties. Im going to grab a couple of surf rods between now and then. Anyone suggest a cheap but usable surf rod and reel setup? prefere one i could catfish with while at home

A few years ago I got some shakespeare tidewater 12 foot rods from walmart in galveston.....They have been great rods for the money....I think they are still only about $35.00...I started out using some the diawa spinning reels that are like $40.00, and are huge...I forget the model, but they will do up to like 20lbs of drag..

Oh noes. Do not buy a surf rod for kayak fishing. Thats just crazy. You dont need any special gear. You can bull reds on bass gear... Most the time. It is much more fun on light tackle anyhow. I use the lightest weight spinning reel shimano makes with a light fast rod as my main rod. Have landed plenty of reds, specks, and flounder, and even a 3ft wide stingray on it. I only have 12lbs mono and i usually do not get broke off.

Also of note. It is not easy to surf fish from a kayak. You will get hammered by breakers all day long. Surf fishing is mostly bank/wade fishing. Some people do run thier bait out with kayaks, but that is only when it is pretty calm.

NO lol the surf rod wont be for the kayak. There going to be for surf fishing from the beach. I plan on using my spinning gear for the kayak, same stuff I use for fresh water. If i use the kayak at all in the surf it will just be to get bait out further than i can cast. I have the do the family thing while im there so i figure i can surf fish while they play on the beach.

No clue. I dont use any of that fancy depth finder stuff or look at water temps to figure when to fish. The time to fish is when i have spare time.

I used to fish the surf at access #4 or #5. PB redfish came from there. 41 inches, did not weigh. Don't keep them over 30. I went on head boat trips occasionally so I bought what some of them used, Shakspeare Sturdy Sticks and Penn Peer reels. Those things are the crowbars of fishing tackle. I just used them in the surf also. I have two. I use a one oz. egg, a bead, a swivel and a Steelon leader with a big circle hook. If the current is too strong I go to a spider weight and a single drop with big bait. I found the gut between the second and third bars far enough out except for sharks or kings. Cut mullet, whole finger mullet for reds and pruned crabs for black drum. Be carefull wading up there because the tide rips are dangerous. If the sand moves underfoot, get out. Good luck!
