Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/04/03 03:32 AM

Exude, man I would love to go wading. However, I'm benched 'til the end of March due to the situation that came up in Feb. Hopefully I'll be up and running by then. Am going in May when Minnesota comes down come hell or high saltwater .......Do me a favor if you go, go along hiway 35 towards the Copano Bay pier, an old bridge thats now a state fishing pier. Just before it to the right is a area of oyster reef that runs out from the bank into Aransas Bay. Would appreciate it if you can see if you can still get to the reef. It was exposed on top and extends a ways into the bay. There was access to that area between Fulton and the causeway. Been a few years, so things might have changed. Believe its called Live Oak reef. Also might look at Goose Island State Park across the bridge, got some good areas to wade by the pier. If you get a good amount of sun, might also look at Steadmans Flat, just south of 361 causeway from Aransas Pass to Port Aransas. You can get to it from behind Fin & Feather Marina, lots of gooey mud and a pain to wade but with some sun the trout could be up there. Works with a N,E,&S wind. Good luck, I'm pulling out hair up here not being able to go.

Too,
Here is an aerial photo of that area. It does not show the reef but I believe I can see it on my topspot. You are talking about the South side of the causeway correct? It looks like there is a reef running Northwest off the point that the bridge and pier come off of, the reef I see is on the Copano Bay side of the bridge. Is this the one? If this one is not it then I see one coming off of Live Oak point on the East side going into Aransas Bay after lookin at it and reading more I think the latter is the one you are talking about.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/04/03 03:34 PM

Be a little careful about using the Terra-Server Photos, I think the cut off for that WEB site was 1994, and things have changed considerably in the Rockport\Aransas area since then. They are OK for general reference.

The area you are looking at in this photo still looks similar to this east of the bridge, I have not paid much attention to the Copano side for a long time, a lot of that area is built up now with housing developments that limits driving access over what it was years ago.

Exude, I am interested in wadefishing this weekend if you are still looking for a fishing buddy. Normally I fish out of Palacios and Turtle bay, but i have done a little out of Rockport. I know of a couple spots accesible by car but nothing that is a big secret. Normally I go out with an uncle i have that fishes there all the time. If you would like to meet up just let me know. You can email me at jalmendarez1@austin.rr.com thanks.

One more thing. I need to get some equipment to make the trip. You see two weekends ago I knocked my whole rod and reel into the water when pulling up the anchor... I'm a dumb [censored]... but, we had fun. Exude let me know. I may need to work here in SA, spring break starts and I work on the River Walk.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/06/03 04:10 AM

Yall catch a bunch, makes no difference how much it's killing me. Don't matter if I go over the deep end this weekend or next. Help meeeeeeeee! Try Portland shoreline if the wind is out of the north, Oso bay has been really hot in the cold weather, but I would put my money on Steadmans if you get three or so days of sun and 70 degree temps. But it IS a booger to wade.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/06/03 05:15 AM

If you all need another hand or just looking for someone to pitch in I'll be glad to meet you all down there. I live in Austin and travel that way at least once a month. So going fishing with a couple of people who are not afraid of a little cool weather would be great. I've been meaning to get back in to fishing like I was last year about this time prior to being injured or put on the I.R.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/07/03 11:33 PM

Guys,
Unfortunately this weekend has been ripped away from me. It is my mom's birthday and it is the first birthday she has had since I have moved back to Texas. Everyone has made plans and they all include me. I don't really mind I guess but if tomorrow is anyhting like today I will be kicking myself all day long. We well have to set something up with a little more notice. Everyone that wants to go pick some dates I would like to do it in the next three weeks. So everyone put in their dates and we will start working on it.
Exude

As far as I can tell I can go any of the next 3 weekends for one day or the whole weekend

Exude, I thought you had gone without us... with the great weather we have had the last two days. I had vision of you catching all to big ones!

We'll do again another time. Tell your mom Happy Birthday!

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/11/03 02:02 AM

Well, I had the alarm set for 3:30 and was getting up on Sunday and decided to wait until I can go down with some other guys. I am not that familar with the area. I suggest Exude, liteboy, and anyothers pick a date. For me Sunday would be the best.

You know we have all those Miss USA gals on the River Walk and it is Spring break and all. God work is hell.

Seriously, I would like to go dowm there with someone who has some knowledge.

Let me know.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/11/03 04:03 AM

Hey ps, sorry to hear you didn't make it. I'm currently in a situation that prevents me from going but by April I'll be in a better situation to go. Think Battle of Flowers weekend(4-26) will be a good one for wading. You open for that? Know it's a long way off, but we should do a little "scouting" as you say for Minnesota. Royal pain to not be able to go for a while, but come May I'll be in position to go several times. Hope that all of us can get down there then. Anybody else?......That being said I do need to get clearence from the tower for takeoff for that weekend .........Already got clearence for take-off whenever Minnesota decides is best.

Would any body be up to going down there on the 22nd or 23rd of this month? I'm up for anytime and the sooner the better, well for for me that is.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/12/03 02:16 AM

TOO, 4/26 is looking pretty good. I will let you know soon to confirm the date.

USMCDD, I'm going to try to get down either this weekend or next. With Spring Break going on it may be crowded??? Lets see if we can get a group of us to go.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/12/03 04:50 PM

I know of a lot of people heading down this weekend for their spring break, and that is why I was suggesting next weekend. And plus I have to work. The weather is suppose to be nice down there though. Things are shaping up for a good spring bite. So if you all do go let me know how things go and would anyone be interested in going back for another weekend of great fishing?

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/13/03 12:14 AM

USMCDD, I hear what you are saying about the Spring Breakers!!!! However, for me this weekend may workout to be the best of the next few.

liteboy and Exude, I'm thinking that I may want to go up on Saturday, probably late afternoon (1-3 p.m.) to the A Pass, Rockport Area, stay the night. Get my bearings and find out where the hot spots are. And if time permits Fish Saturday evening and as early as we can put line in the water on Sunday.

I will have to lean on y'alls knowledge as to where to stay, and the best spots to fish this time of the season.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/13/03 01:50 AM

Pscott, suggest you buy a Top spot map of the upper Laguna Madre/ Aransas Bay area. Good investment. Weather holds, I would suggest the Steadmans reef area to catch fish. Afternoon should be good mud should warm up. Yall put a mark by the last weekend in April we need to scout if we can. Can't be having Minnesota coming down and watching his line all day with nothing going on.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/13/03 04:47 AM

That's it. If the winds keep coming from a easterly direction, it will help with casting. Again can be a bear to wade but I believe from now to the Spring bull tides, mud will be the key. However 2 weeks of sun and S wind can change that.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/13/03 01:50 PM

pscottjr and co.
4/23 is looking good I am counting the days. I know of a couple of places to stay in the Rockport area and I do have two of the Top Spot maps. I definitely like the idea of going down on Saturday night. I will keep everyone posted and watch this thread.

P.S. pscottjr that's a long story on the 4:30 thing I will leave that for drive down conversation!

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/14/03 12:20 AM

Let's see, if I can sort this out correctly. I am planning on going down this weekend 3/15, liteboy will be nearby but, will probably not be able to come; USMCDD wants to go down 3/23, TOO wants to schedule a trip on 4/26, and now Exude wants to go 4/23?? (maybe that is 3/23?)!!!

Well, if Exude really meant 3/23 then that looks like the winner.

Exude please confirm your date. TOO's date looks good for a "scouting" trip for the minnesota 5/8 weekend.

If the weather is going to be anything like today I may be forced to go this weekend.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/14/03 03:32 AM

That's the spot, but I didn't see an arrow. You can drive behind the bait stand and wade out to the areas on the map. N-NW wind you can cast over the reef itself if you can find the shallow stretch to get close. E or SE wind you can cast further to the right. Try to find the potholes or the grass beds, short leader and an Alameda float for the beds. Not too hard to figure out once you see it in person. Just think of opposites, try deeper and if nothing, try shallow, try mud, nothing?, try sand. Potholes?, grass beds. grass line?, open flats. Slow?, fast. Work different areas and see what works. Every time I fish I learn something new about the actual fishing. Took me a long time to learn what I know, and I know I know very little. If that makes sense. I've never had a bad fishing day, have had bad catching days. .........Read somewhere a while ago, about someone saying that everytime he goes fishing, he can find 5 things that makes his trip memorial, realized I do the same. Get out there and learn and then file it away in the book upstairs. Mud will make waders worth every penny, IMHO. Buddy of mine is going down to the Laguna Saturday, told him he's going to get an All-Star enema, if he catches a bunch. .......So get out there and have fun and catch and learn, make sure you let us landed folks know how you do.

liteboy, will email cell#.

Plan as of now is to go down Sat afternoon, fish, scout areas for next day, and fish early Sunday, leaving around noon.

For those of y'all thinking about next weekend - the forecast is great, as matter of fact better than this weekend... Hmmmmm, you think the wife will let me go 2 weekends in a row? All of us know the weather forecasters are always right on!

I am hoping for a good fishing weekend, the weather has warmed and the nights are getting alittle warmer by the day.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks TOO, for all your info and help.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/18/03 12:11 AM

I'm alittle embarassed to make this post. Went down on Saturday, raining like hell. Went straight to Stedmen Island, hung out at the Fin & Fowl Bait shop and waited for an hour for the rain to let up.

It let up some, so I got some shrimp and headed to fish. It was me and the pelicans. The wind picked up and the rain varied.

Had not luck, except when I was using my float like a wind sail, letting out line a little at a time. Got the rig out about another 40 yds and had a hit. 1 Hit!!! I got cold and wet and decided to come back in to call it a day, try again the next day.

I then spent the next 2 hours looking for a hotel room nothing from Ingleside to Fulton. So I came on back to SA. Of course the weather cleared some the next day and I probably missed out on some good fishing.

It was fun, except for trying to find a hotel.

I'm looking forward to the next trip.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/18/03 01:41 AM

How was the wading? mud or sand where you were fishing? Saw the rain on radar, and then Sunday, wow! That's Texas weather. Once you see an area, you get that confidence stuff going, and start putting things together.
Posted By: pscottjr

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/18/03 02:58 AM

Honestly it was muddy at first then as I moved to the left of the oyster beds and further out it was more sandy. Kind of hard to see with the rain and cloudy/dark conditions.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/18/03 03:01 AM

The wading was fine. The further out I went the easier it was. I mud made it a little harder. When I was younger my dad and I use to go Duck hunting alot. I use to wade forever. I always thought that it would be good training for football players.

Re: Wadefishing Rockport This Weekend? - 03/18/03 04:39 AM

Hey guys I got a chance to do some fishing in Palacios this weekend. We waded out about half a mile and hooked up with some big reds. What an experience though. As we were wading out we actually walked right on to this school shortly after figuring that out they started chasing some bait and it was on. Just to see those bad boys get aggresive that is a sight. Well I ended up with one fat red about 23 inches. By the time I got that one in the rest cleared out. But like I said earlier what an experience. I'm looking forward to meeting up with you guys for a good day of fishing. See ya Sunday. Any body up in the Austin area looking for some company on the ride down?
