Shark Fishing

My dad I like to take the kayaks out past the breakers and catch black tips and hammerheads at packery channel but lately we havnt had much luck at all. Is it just the wrong time of year? Whats the best bait to use? And Ive also been told that if you go where the blue water and the brown water meet that youll find sharks there. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

What kind of bait are you using?

Mullet, Ladyfish, Stingray, etc?

actually ive talked with ppl that have used weed eater cord for years and years and it holds up though ive never used it myself. sounds fishy but it aparently works. sorry green water . if you go on tsf then those guys can tell ya everything ya need to know.

I use weedeater line for the first 3 to 4 ft then steel from there for smaller sharks up to about five ft, never had any problems but on bigger ones use all steel

Weed eater line is silly.. and it's not much cheaper than mono so that begs the question as to why people use it..?

Frankly there is no reason to use weed eater line.. it wasn't built for fishing.

So people need to stop suggestion it. Get yourself a mono leader that was built for this sport..

what is silly is paying more money when you can get something that works just as well for cheaper

I guess you didn't read GreenWater post saying it's not much more expensive to use mono.

Weedeater line goes for $.04 a foot and mono $.06 a foot. it's not that big of a price difference. I would most definitely pay the difference due to the fact on how much memory Weedeater line has. Plus why not use fishing line for your fishing leader, do things right.

It's the right time of year to catch blacktips, pretty much any bait will work maybe your using a little bit to large of a bait try using a bait about the size of a softball for blacktips they don't get very big. You don't have to go to the blue water in fact Billy Sandifer says he catches most of his sharks right behind the fist sand bar. Billy is the king of surf fishing so I would believe anything he says.

Around Corpus the sharks aren't as thick as they are in say Matagorda or Galveston where you see most of the BTB guys hooking into sharks from their yaks. You could hook into a blacktip from the yak but odds are slim, you'll have to put a lot of time in to catch them. Your from Austin might as well hit up Matagorda instead of Corpus you'll have way better luck.

We usually use ribbonfish or mullet and the occasional large perch. We have a house in corpus on packery so thats why we stay there.

I am heading out next monday (the 27th). I will renting a condo in what the owner said was "lake padre" just off packery. Will be heading into the bay and gulf in my 22' xpress center console. Will be looking for shark among other fish. Any help guys would be appreciated. I am real handy with a cast net. Have 3- 7 foot radius nets and if i may say pretty good at casting them. I tourny fish for cats and use pretty much big gizzard shad for bait and have to use a big net to catch them. I normally use skip jack, i think they are called "horse mullet"? big mullet! and ribbon fish. Drift offshore with frozen one gallon buckets of ground up gizzard shad, fish guts and bulls blood. But any other advise would be appreciated!! are there any wrecks or rigs that could be reached easily with my boat? take in mind my rig only has a 20 gallon tank and a 6 gallon extra tank on board. She is not a self bailing rig either. She is powered y 115 hp four stroke yamaha.

I mainly fish the uppercoast (mainly high island area). Sometimes we trek over and fish along the coast up to Gorda. June-September is what I consider my months to target sharks, w/ July & August being most productive. We always look for a color change and fish it. If there's no apparent color, I look for signs of bait activity, tide lines, slicks,etc...and fish it. If there's no color change,bait activity,slicks,etc...then we usually paddle out and start fishing at around 200 yds and keep moving further out until we find our targeted species. We will mainly drift baits under a balloon. Ray, shad, mullet are choice of baits with ray being the most productive.

weedeater line is much more abresion resictent then mono as it was build to hold up agianist fencnes and concrete and whatever you through at it its really not used cuase its cheaper but becuase it will let your leaders last longer

It's also smaller in diameter than mono so a seashell cut and or other type of abrasions structurally weaken it quicker than the exact same cut on a thicker piece of mono.

Why not do things right and use FISHING line On a FISHING leader instead of a line used for lawn care.

weedeater line is made to be tough its made to get hit aginst stuff and their is not a certian size their is diffrent diamiters you can get im not saying you have to use it im just saying it works my leaders last longer

I would try fishing PIN's, me and a few friends of mine just got back from there a few days ago and caught a 9 ft 2 in bull shark while we were there. Also, try using cownose stingray, we have had alot of luck on it lately
