How to record my route with lowrance fish finder??? Going 150 miles offshore... - 05/26/18 03:23 PM

Hi I have experienced a technical difficulty on my new boat it has got this older model lowrance LCX - 3 fish finder and every time I go out the pass it starts making a little purple line on the screen but when I get really far away the line disappears so I think that the line is just erasing itself after 50 miles or a 100 miles or whatever but I want this stupid purple line to stay on there because when I'm going back at night I can't find my way I don't know which way I came and it sucks. I'm sure maybe somebody else may have the same problem so I wanted to point it out on here and see if you all had a solution. I have tried dam near everything I guess it says the record route there's a bunch of settings I'm just getting sick of this thing I aint figured it out and have been over 840 miles in this boat.

You shouldn't be relying on the current track to get home. Set up known waypoints that you can navigate with - channel entrances, etc. Your gps should have a function equivalent to "GO TO" that you can use to show the path to that waypoint. That way you're relying on known, stored information, rather than a current track that might get erased.

And even with GPS, you should always know what compass bearing home is at, in case your boat GPS fails completely. Suppose you head out of Galveston or Freeport on a bearing of 135 degrees to get to your fishing spots. Then you know that your return heading has to be 315 degrees. It may not get you smack on the nose to the Galveston jetties, but once you get close enough to shore, you can probably use your phone as a backup GPS to get where you need to be.

Yar see that sailor but my problem is on the map sometimes It looks like I'm driving on a island or something but really there's no island there just got washed out so the way I drive is I use that purple line and make trails line in the daytime and at night when I come back I can follow that purple line I know I'm not going to hit anything that is submerged under the water. Mainly river driving but it's no big deal

Ah, I see. Your question was posed about going 150 miles offshore, not running in a river.

Nevermind what I said then - not applicable to river running.

Time to upgrade your electronics. Get a good chart/plotter. You can see where you are,
and how to get back to where you should be.

You could also save the trail when you are about 40 miles out. Once saved and another one is started that trail you saved should stay in tact. I do agree with others though. Might be time for a new unit.
