Grandma's Fishing Superstition

Grandma's Fishing Superstition - 05/31/17 07:12 PM

Been real slow around here lately so I figured you guys get might a kick out of this.

My grandmother who lives in the panhandle of Florida (very country) has told me since I can remember "If the Cows are standing, the fish are biting. If the cows are laying down, the fish are not biting". Has anyone else ever heard this ole wives tale?

She was also very superstitious about her fishing pole. When I was a kid we were fishing in the pond she has in her front yard. I stepped over her fishing pole and she lit into me. She started scream that it's bad luck to walk over someones fishing pole and if I didn't cross back over the pole(undo the initial crossing) it was going to cause here bad luck fishing the rest of the day.

Anyone else have any crazy fishing superstitions?

Not any I could think of but I once bought a fishing pole when I was younger from an old man at a garage sale. He had told me he had caught many fish with it during his years. My first fishing pole. Not lying I caught over 100 catfish with it my first year fishing, it was like a catfish magnet. I left it on my front porch one day and someone stole it. I had to buy another fishing pole, from a garage sale. Hit up the same spots and used same baits/techniques, no luck at all. Caught 3 unders all year. I only fished 5-10 times a year when I was younger. It was as if tha first fishing pole had this mans luck still on it. I also believe if someone else had bad luck with their fishing poles they would pass it down and that person would have bad luck with it as well. I believe in "breaking in" your fishing poles and I do have more luck with a certain fishing poles than others!

Sometimes my fingers won't work. It's random.

If I have a hard time tying a lure, I realize it's probably not going to work. It gets only a few casts once it's on, and if it doesn't produce quickly, it's gone!

Addendum: This topic would do very well in the Off Topic...consider posting a new version?
Addendum II: I'd do it, but this is Mr. uacdub's topic, and it's a good one! IN65

Never want to catch a fish on the first cast of the day. It has ALWAYS been bad luck to me.

I heard that even pros feel the same way and usually the first cast of the day will be like a foot from the boat...ensuring they dont catch anything and not jinxing the day.

Oh and topwaters work best on days they leave a bubble trail.

That has something to do with the air pressure but I always heard that. On those days when a buzz boat leaves a trail of bubbles the whole way... hold on! You gonna get your arm broke!

And this is why my buzzbait worked all morning long this past Sunday.

Not from my grandma but from my dad, when you see bluebonnets the bass are up chewing on the grass.

@Indianation65 sorry I completely miss-read your post this morning. I wouldn't have mind if you moved this to OFF TOPIC. Infact I thought you were going too, thats the part I read wrong.

My PawPaw used to tell me the same thing, still to this day when I am headed to fish if I see cows standing up I get excited. I've never even really noticed if I have better luck on days I notice them. He also always told me " wind from the east the fish bite the least, wind out of the west and the fish bite the best".

The crappie will start biting when the dogwoods are in bloom.

One guy in the Catfish section or from a member in A.C.A.T.S., shared that he was told if the cows were feeding (not sure if it was standing), the fish were biting. If the cows were laying down, the fish weren't biting.

There is also the bit about directions of the wind. The most famous is, "Wind out of the East, the fish bite the least. Wind out of the West, the fish bite the best."

There is another portion as to North & South. Let's see if I have these somewhere.

And there are many variants it seems.

This was posted by Keith years ago:
+++++++++
Wind out of the East, fishing the least. Wind out of the South, blows the bait out their mouth. Wind out of the West, fishings the best. Wind out of the North, big blues go to work!
+++++++++

By another from 2011:
++++++++++++++++++
Wind from the North, fisherman does not go forth.
Wind from the South, blows the bait in the fish's mouth.
Wind from the East, the fish bite least.
Wind from the West, the fish bite best.
++++++++++++++++++

OK, searching my massive archives from 2006 to present day here on U-6, I found these notes ...

from a letter to a catfisherman up in Oklahoma on 5-23-2008, I had this paragraph in it---
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This old diddy that Darrell told me at RB rang true (I have noticed it seems to be correct). I learned a new one this weekend, as one told me his grandpa told him the one on the wind just mentioned, but also if the cows are laying down, the fish aren't biting.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

from another letter on 6-4-2008 to Darrell at RB Marina & 3 of my Catfish Calendar students, my Uncle & a few others I clipped a few notes---
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Also Darrell's "diddy"---
"Wind out of the East,
Fish bite the least.
Wind out of the West,
Fish bite the best."

Ron told me there was one on North & South also. He remembered-
"Wind out of the South,
The hook's in its mouth."

Ron said the north one had to do with something about drinking.
One ACATS member told me his Grandpa also told him when the cows are laying down, the fish aren't biting.

I can say the West & East wind "diddy" does seem to hold true. I"ll have to check the cows laying down bit.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

While further research needs to be done on the cows laying down or standing up/feeding, here is some science found a few years back ...

It seems that satellite images show that groups of cattle seem to feed mainly in a North to South, or South to North direction. Let me see if I can find that in the archives.

Hmm, did not find the exact key phrase. Let me try my archives on TFF. Wow! Found it in the first one I decided to look into.
The subject was the solunar tables back on 6-22-2010 to which I shared as to the recent findings.

>>>
In actuality, there is a true science behind it, the same goes for my catfish calendar. In trying to explain it in the simplest manner possible, it has to do with magnetics & instincts. Animals, including fish, are affected by certain magnetic fluxes and fields. Recent satellite findings by watching cattle graze, is that they feed in a north/south pattern (either way), but the group indicates the pattern. Scientists are now studying, don't understand it, but realize it has to do with magnetics.

Here is a snip touching on it:
+++++++++++++
In a new study, physicists have investigated the role of quantum interactions in magneto-reception, and have shown that quantum technologies could be used to enhance or reduce the performance of an animal's chemical compass, and potentially control other biological functions.

Many animals possess some kind of magnetic sense, allowing them to navigate by using a magnetic field. The ability to detect a magnetic field, called magneto-reception, has been observed in a variety of animals, including birds, turtles, sharks, lobsters, cows, fungi, and bacteria. However, scientists do not fully understand the mechanisms responsible for this ability.

No bananas on the boat.

Never give away a knife to a friend, sell it to them for any coin in their pocket or you will break ties with your fishing buddy.

This isn't necessarily about fishing but my dad used to say getting a double yolk in an egg was good luck. One time he was fishing a tourney and that morning he cooked a dozen eggs. 11 of 12 eggs had a double yolk. They got skunked lol

That's funny. As you probably noticed from my initial post, my grandma is very superstitious. One of her many superstitions is that if you drop a washcloth\hand towel you have to shake it out of your going to have company stop by the house. Never understood where the hell she picked up all these crazy ideas.

That's not superstitious, that's just smart.

My grandpa used to tell me that it was good luck to have a dragonfly land on your fishing pole while you were fishing. You couldn't prove it by me.
