2015 DFW sandy run

2015 DFW sandy run - 01/22/15 10:18 PM

I saw Ketchin's report in the striper section and saw the forecast for the upcoming week with temps in the high 60's and maybe into the 70's.

Anyone else thinking the run up here will be starting earlier than normal? I'm just hoping for some consistent rain so the creeks will be on this year.

Do you know if this is the creek out off of Shoreline Rd. in Ft. Worth? Wouldn't mind hitting it up. I googled the Ft. Worth Nature Center and the map shows some spots to reach the trinity river on Shoreline Rd so just curious.

Are fish ok to eat out of the Nature Center? I've never fished there, but just checking it out on Google maps makes me wary because it's so close to Lake Worth.

The consumption advisory for Worth was lifted either last year or the year before. That's for the smaller faster growing species. It is still recommended that cats and larger fish not be consumed, at least that's the last report I saw.

Just a heads up...I tried to go to the nature center today and fish. First, it costs $5.00 to even get in. Second, they do not allow bank fishing, you must be in a boat. I got ran off for trying to bank fish. They gave me the $5.00 back but just trying to save the rest of you from wasting your time!

That's strange, no bank fishing.

can you get there on boat from Lake Worth.?

Re: 2015 DFW sandy run - 01/25/15 01:15 AM

Have no clue. Apparently there is a boat ramp in the nature center. They asked me if I was meeting someone on a boat and I told them I was by myself and just fishing from the bank. They told me I had to leave cause they don't allow any bank fishing.

You could a few years ago but I think there was more water in the lake back then. It's probably been close to five years or more since I went up in the river from the lake and even then it wasn't always easy getting in there, lots of stumps some just below the water surface so you couldn't see them.

Are you guys talking about fishing the trinity in the nature center? OR is there a different body of water?

Re: 2015 DFW sandy run - 01/25/15 08:25 PM

I referencing the part of the Trinity that runs through the actual Nature Center.

That's what I was referring to also. I think that's the West Fork of the Trinity. It runs from Eagle Mountain Lake thru the Nature Center into Lake Worth.

Yes I wish they allowed fishing from the bank too. I would gladly pay $5.00 to fish from the bank in there.

Well, I just tried the Elm Fork of the Trinity river off of 380, Denton county. Mostly fishing for crappie and hit all the spots I do well on. But not today. So I went to what I call the big bend. And was able to catch one sand bass. 11.5" and threw it back. There was some top water action of Bass and two sightings of beavers in the water today. I want to go again Saturday, but there is a good chance of rain...

Not trying to throw anybody off the trail..but I would be highly suspect that any whites will make it up the elm fork north of lewisville. The run was non existant in that creek last year due to low water as seen in this satelite image dated 2015.

As for the top water action.. I know that there are a bunch of gar in there still. LINK

who knows, they may be able to make it up a little farther north... but doubtful.

I don't remember seeing that many trees with leave on them today. I will check again tomorrow....
And I did see some gar surface today. But who cares about the gar. They don't even taste like chicken!!!

Re: 2015 DFW sandy run - 01/26/15 09:52 PM

I've been to the side channel that dumps into Lew from the Elm Fork below 380 a few months back. The rains from this summer dropped a few giant trees blocking the main river channel there. I doubt very many sandbass if any are getting through. The water is just trickling out to the main lake through dozens of smaller shallow side channels.

It's too bad because with the lake at it's current level, we were catching some game fish a year ago.

you could, but you would be wading in with the alligators, not sure that's the wisest thing to do especially if you hook up to a fish.

You can access the same water from the bank at 9 mile bridge rd. It's the clear fork of Trinity that flows from Eagle Mountain to Lake Worth. Good luck.

I actually think that is the west fork of the Trinity ....the Clear Fork originates in west Texas flows in\out of Lake Weatherford then in\out of Benbrook before joining the West Fork just north of downtown FW.
