Re: Lewisville Barge - 04/14/12 03:16 AM
Nice job!
Better be carefull edwardos, some of those in the bottom right corner of the pic. Look like small hybrids
just goes to show you how hard they are to identify. I see the lines. always check the tooth patch guys....

Re: Lewisville Barge - 04/16/12 01:17 PM
I hope they werent hybrids, because I dont want any bad fishing karma. If so I didnt notice that night, but I do see the stripes are broken so yeah must check tooth patch. I have no desire to keep any fish other than Crappie, sandies, catfish, and possibly Bream.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 04/28/12 11:44 AM
Caught a few nice crappie fishing the crack, both on jigs and winners. All keepers were caught on jigs -and BG in monkey milk (I think that's the name) was best producer.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 04/29/12 11:23 AM
What's a good night to go there when it's not too busy? I want to set up several rods and do some catfishin outside the barge on the walkway. Thx.
The barge has a 3 rod limit. When I catfish I like to have at least 6-8 rods out. And I can't resist throwing a crappie pole out whenever I go there, so that only leaves 2 rods for the cats. Therefore I personally don't catfish there anymore. But I hear people do pretty well on the right side with livers.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 04/30/12 03:01 AM
About how deep were they?
Out there it's probably 10-15 feet, but that's just a guess. I'd fish the south side of the barge as close to the rocks as you feel comfortable casting. If you don't want to pay to fish there, just go to the frisbee golf park and walk down to the bank. There good fishing spots only 100 yards from the barge.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 05/01/12 03:30 PM
On the sandbass, you casting out or just fishing straight down, and how is the catfish bite?
Drop the minnow straight down with a split shot 4-5 inches above the hook. Depth should be just to the bottom edge of the light......about 15 feet or so down. Hybrid, sandies, crappie and the occasional channel all get caught this way out there.

From I-35 take the FM407 exit and go east on Lake Park rd. Turn left at the four-way stop (Mill St) and go down about 1/4 mile past the apts. Make the first right and it dead-ends at the barge. Your pass is good for 12 hours so you can come and go as you please. No alcohol allowed.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 05/02/12 01:35 PM
I haven't been fishing for very long and this sounds like it might be a good place to transition from CPR to Dinner. What's the best way to keep a keeper? And, is the fishing elbow to elbow or is there plenty of space between anglers?
Plenty of room to fish, but the choice spots getting taken up quickly after dark and in the morning.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 05/14/12 04:26 PM
Went to the barge for the first time this past Saturday. My son caught these on minnows. I'm still learning to recognize fish so could someone please help me identify what we caught.
I got this at a local pond. It got too close to the lure and the treble hooked it on the side.
We spent about 2 hours sitting around watching the boats and planes pass by. It was a good time.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 05/19/12 02:42 PM
Night time is really packed up there I go regularly but I only go during the week cus there is too many ppl. They tangle up your lines if they catch a fish cus everyone is packed together. The catfish won't be in the area until the dandles move away which is early in the morning before first light. There is catfish there at night but all small ones. I've done really well there for crappie and bass but catfish are tough to come by. If I catch 4 keepers that is a good night. I caught all of them on shad an minnows. Tried dip bait but it only caught a bunch of small cats and buffalo. Blue gill will land you a nice bass or catfish but it will take a good couple of hours. Hope this helps. I'm trying to find a new spot for catfish. Don't know where to go yet.

this time of year, find the hard bottom banks close to creek channels. catfish will be spawning up shallow soon, if they already aren't.

Any update on how the fishing is here (specifically cats and crappie)? I'm thinking about trying either here or Mcpherson Slough at Grapevine this weekend, which do ya'll think I'll do better at for catfish and crappie?
Posted By: DalMichaelLas
Re: Lewisville Barge - 06/01/12 05:46 AM
I fish there 3-4 times a week. A lot of the guys there pull in Carp and Buffalo like crazy. The ones that fish for crappie seem to do well also. Myself, I only really fish for catfish and have trouble landing anything of note, but that not because of the barge. I dont catch anything anywhere I go.:<
I've fished here less than 10 times and have had lots of luck with crappie and white bass both late night and early morning. Some decent sized fish come out of here. Both myself and my friend's son have caught a few small channel cat and possibly baby blues while crappie fishing, but very rarely. I've only seen a small number of smaller catfish come out of here by people actually fishing for them with one large channel cat and two smaller blue cats, which were decent enough size to get some nice fillets off of. I think I've seen people catch more cats unintentionally than the other way around though. I've heard a lot about nice channels and blues coming from this location by some regulars. Seen a lot of carp/buffalo action at night in the portion of the barge just outside of the carp well. I've also heard that there is some decent LMB action here as well, but haven't tried my luck yet. Most crappie/white bass action on jigs IMO, but live bait works as well. This has quickly become one of my favorite locations. While I haven't attempted to catch sunfish, I see plenty of them at night feeding the bait placed in the carp well, so I would assume a little hook and worm action should easily score you some fresh bait. You can't really go wrong for crappie here though. I managed a 1.19lb crappie yesterday morning. Please pardon the rugged/sleepy look. I usually attend the barge after a long day with my daughter and stay well into the morning so I usually look rough and tired. lol. If anyone is ever out at the barge, give me a shout. I'm the only short black younger guy I've seen out there at night and early morning. lol!

Are y'all just using minnows or are you using a jig to catch them
Posted By: rangers98
Re: Lewisville Barge - 06/17/12 08:43 AM
Whenever I go everyone uses minnows. That's what I've had the best luck with. But then again I've never had luck with jigs.
I do both one day its the minnows next day it's the jigs some times it's the minnow and the jigs. I take two poles one for minnows and one for jigs. I prefer to catch them on a jig. Someone told me that there is no skill in fishing with a minnow. I see what they are saying but at the end of the day you have fish then thats all that counts.

Crappie/White bass everytime I go... Got 4 channel cats out of South Lakes Park in Denton a little earlier... Think I'm about to hit the barge in a few minutes to hopefully catch enough for a decent fish fry.... If anyone else heads out there, stop by the point and say hello...

Thanks for the info!
If you can catch Big Jack's open, get your minnows there. You'll get bigger minnows.
Forgot to report about my last trip to the barge. It was pretty slow with not nearly as many fishermen present. I used jigs as usual. Alot of small sandies, one small drum, and a couple small crappie. I am not familiar with drum at all. Are they edible and if so, what is the size/bag limit? Noticed a lack of bait fish at the point in comparison to previous trips. Only left with 8 sandie keepers. A group of people there had two decent LMB that were given to them and they said that the donating party claimed to have caught both fish on live nightcrawlers. I found that to be interesting. Anyone else have luck recently or has action died down a bit?

Re: Lewisville Barge - 06/21/12 03:33 PM
I don't have a recent report but I also find the largemouth thing interesting. A couple of years ago I caught one of my best largemouths ever (probably around 6 pounds) with nightcrawler there. Of course I was too stupid to take a picture.

I take it that the barge is still slow... Tempted to go out and try my luck... Hmm...

the barge is pretty much "baited" all year. I think the sudden weather change had the fish confused, all the reports from the barge were good up until that front came through

fishing suck this year cause they moved the barge back 20 feet
fishing suck this year cause they moved the barge back 20 feet
And what was it last year?
I have to ask as I wonder why they would move it to suck as in if you don't catch fish then well they don't make the $$$ and then that would suck for them.
The fishing has for me never been that good but a place to fish during the winter it has not been so bad.
A fishing barge is just a paid place to fish and fishing is still fishing you may catch fish or not ......................................................
At this time in the year I would be looking for the large mouth bass cast at the rocks from the barge see if you can catch them green trash fish as they say I for one think they taste good......
Maybe them white bass too.

Re: Lewisville Barge - 07/10/12 07:10 PM
How has the bite been recently?
Night fishing was awesome probably a little over a month or so ago if you like crappie/white bass/carp/buffs. I didn't fish it last year, but a worker there did mention something about a storm damaging the entrance ramp/platform a little while back. Perhaps that convinced them to move it in. Especially since they explained the reason for recording names is for insurance purposes in the event that tragedy strikes.
Think I'll give it a try since it's been so long and report back.
I am thinking of trying early in the AM

Re: Lewisville Barge - 07/27/12 10:07 PM
Thanks for the report!
When I was going to college in 1975-79, I fished that
barge and had some great relaxing moments there....
caught crappie with minnows and used small jis that
seemed to work when live bait would not - work the
jig slow with little jerks. Hope you catch a good mess...
Well, I went out with the intent of catching crappie and the expected sandbass to accompany them at the point, but I actually took some garlic hotdog to try out for catfish as well. Only one or two light bites on jigs, but no hooksets for fish landed. Minnows got all of the action as fas a crappie/sandies go. With the exception of a couple sandies, everyone was catching small crappie on minnows. It was slow, but mainly crappie biting and most fish were just short of the limit by .5" or less. I got my first doubleheader at the barge on minnows this morning. Muahahaha! A few keepers (crappie and 1 sandie I think) were caught. Three channel cats were caught (by other people) with one nice one on a balloon rig with cut shad. The gentleman who works there and has always come off honest to me said that alot of recent/decent crappie action had been in the crappie well and that everyone was shocked. Most of this happened while still dark out. I didn't have any luck with catfish. When the sun decided it was time for punishment again, I did get to witness schools of sandies boiling during a topwater shad buffet a good number of times, but they were too far out to reach via cast. A guy was fishing the crack with minnows at this time with a lot of fish landed and had the same issue with pretty much all fish being crappie, but also being just under the size limit. He got two keepers. I finally switched up for LMB and caught one small one between the bank and the uncovered area near the crack, but he got off while trying to swing him onto the barge over the rail. No pic of the baby LMB due to this, but being that this was my first LMB at the barge, so I was happy. Posted some pics of some smaller ones to give an idea of the average sizes being caught and the two fish that made up my doubleheader (under the limit as well). Think I also got a pic of one keeper as well.
Doubleheader Dinks lol

Took my daughter last night to try and catch some carp. Not much luck. Was able to catch a catfish before leaving.

Miss that place! Lots of childhood memories there. Too many years out here in dry dusty Lubbock, haven't used my fishin pole in a year!
Just left the barge. Saw two nice catfish caught. I caught one keeper crappie and one dink LMB. I missed/lost a total of 8... Yes.. 8 LMB by the rocks!!! Not my day... Super rusty, etc... So many hooksets only to have the fish suddenly get off or throw the hook... I don't think I've ever had this happen to me... Kinda hit me where it hurts... Gotta redeem myself fairly soon... Fishing was slow overall though across the board (all species/locations around the barge). Hope someone can take something from this.
My dink/first fish of the day... Lol

Nice cat caught just before I left on live shad by gentleman pictured. This one fought like Tyson in his prime!
Ahh missing and hitting hook sets Still just plan out good fun. I can see that from your post. Better then my day spent woking on drywall and such LOL

Caught at least a dozen unders and three keepers. One was 1.28 lbs the others were just over 11 inches.. caught some bass and a few perch too..
Good times in the heat of the barge our not LOL If you outside then heat is on as to the fish the water temp is the same to them.
I hear ya. The heat wasn't too bad though. I look forward to my next trip as I gotta land some of those bigger bass. You will see pics of them. I promise. Unless you're able to make it out with me the next time I go. ;o)

Went Saturday morning around 6 am. Caught 2 small sandies and 1 small channel cat outside. Moved inside around 8 and between then and 1 caught 6 throwback and 1 keeper crappie. One guy had a pretty nice stringer with at least 6 crappie, fishing the wells.

Nice fish. I've never been, but I want to give it a shot. The bass pictured isn't a LMB it's a spotted bass.
