Trinity River Fort Worth - 11/04/19 02:59 PM

Hello all,
New to the forum. Didn't see a thread regarding the Trinity. Anyhow, I have been scouting places all over the Greater Fort Worth area along the Trinity River chasing catfish, gar fish and having a blast with family and friends. Ill post some pics once I get all that figured out showing some of my catches. Tight lines all!! cool

There's a place where I used to catch lots of fish years ago when I was stationed at old Carswell AFB, ... the Trinity comes out of Lake Worth
and winds its way around the base and under River Oaks Blvd. Easy access . Good fishing... welcome

Love the Trinity for numbers. It's like a box of chocolate. wink As I've said many times over the years... when I researched the Fort Worth Trinity a long time...ago.. I had the honor of talking to several old timers who told me stories and showed me photos of large....blue catfish, alligator gar caught right where panther island/old radio shack building is/was. Just amazing.

Re: Trinity River Fort Worth - 12/01/19 07:22 PM

Behind the Lake Worth dam, below Samson Marion Park there is a big hole of water where the river starts that years ago we used to catch
mega giant gars and carp. We could access that area by going on the road that passes Burgers Lake and swing past the dam.
Don't know if that's still available now,..?? I think you can still work your way down to that area from the Park.
I lost a chaise lounge type folding lawn chair there once,...went to pee in the bushes, and came back in time to see the
chair going under water. I had stuck my rod down in the chair, and something pretty big took the whole thing right out in the water... fish

I grew up fishing the stretch from SW Blvd to Hulen. It isn't much further around to Trinity Park. Back then, 40ish years ago, we were hearing the same thing. Bob Hood was the Outdoors writer for the Startlegram, so I wrote in and asked the question for his column. As a kid, it was pretty cool to see him respond in print. He had asked "those in the know" and said it was safe to eat fish between downtown and BB Lake. I realize a lot changes in 40 years, but if I was eating what I caught, I'd probably still eat fish out of there. With the third eye that popped up on my forehead, I should be able to tell if something didn't look right with the meat before I cooked it!

Get a couple more and w/ some hushpuppies make a blockparty fish fry (social distancing of course) but within arms reach of the vittles. Have a grand Memorial Day and thank a vet if you get a chance.
Oh yeah, congrats on the cats !! thumb flag

Re: Trinity River Fort Worth - 05/24/20 05:36 PM

Great job! Grew up in ft worth and learned how to fish on the trinity back in the 60s. The hole behind the lake worth spillway we called it the gar hole. When ever the lake would spill over there would be long deep puddles of water full of fish, it was like every cast you would catch a fish. The fish hatchery used to be beside the hole and behind the hospital.... great times, thanks for sharing

Re: Trinity River Fort Worth - 08/26/20 08:55 PM

If I'm going after gar, carp, and catfish, is there any particular type of area I should be on the lookout for? Also, does time of the day play a big role on when gar are biting in the Trinity? I'm assuming during the heat of the day, fish will congregate in cooler areas (shade, deep water, etc.), but does that mean they won't be as actively looking for food?

Re: Trinity River Fort Worth - 08/30/20 06:46 PM

I've been to the spillway on Beach Street and I-30 twice this week from 6am-10am or so. Didn't have much luck there despite seeing tons of gar and bass. Is there anything I might've been doing wrong? I wasn't getting bites at all, except a couple bluegill. Used lures, cut bait, and live bait.

Re: Trinity River Fort Worth - 09/03/20 07:42 PM

I'm thinking about hitting the Gateway Park area later tonight, anyone been there? I've heard it's kind of ghetto.
With all this rain, is there another place I should hit instead? The other places I'm considering are the spillways on Nutt Lake, 4th Street, and Beach street. Going for cats and gar, or pretty much anything that'll bite.

Re: Trinity River Fort Worth - 09/04/20 03:22 PM

Gateway is sketchy in the evenings. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. But there are some good areas to toss a line in. Ill be back at these spots you mentioned next week as I have been battling a knee issue. Sucks getting old!! LOL. Tight lines!! fish

Forgot about this thread, a few months ago, I caught a water body record Redear while fishing for bait. Got my certificates, but never got my name in the books, because a few weeks later someone caught one the same length, but half a tenth heavier.
