6 specie day on a flooded creek

6 specie day on a flooded creek - 03/29/18 02:26 AM

I had the notion that my favorite feeder creek might be having visitors after all the rain. It wasn't bang bang but a fairly steady bite. Shad were there and the first taker was a big gasper goo we parted ways amiably, next up was what I think was a big channel but he broke off at my feet, adios, decided it was not a good day for a 6 pound leader and remedied that, next up was a bunch of sandies that I picked up on a curly tail jig between catfish bites. The Flathead was a surprise, I've never caught them there and I thought they only ate live bait, myth dispelled. The crappie was a loner that snuck in between the sandies. The blue cat was not the least bit sly he grabbed my shad offering and headed for the other side. I convinced him otherwise. So where are we, crappie, sand bass, flathead, channel, blue, gasper goo on and seven if you count needle nose gar. Fun day in the mist.

And six 1.5 pound bags of fish in the freezer.

Well the water dropped back down to almost normal and cleared up a lot. Didn't help the bite at all, I caught shad and had 3 poles out for catfish while I tossed a curlytail jig for whatever. Ended up with a nice Blue and 2 sandies. Worth it.

I would consider your catch to be seven different species. Never the less, you had an awesome day. Flat heads will feed on a lure that represent moving bait fish, I catch several when using pig and jig with the crawfish scent spray on it.

Surprise catch at midnight off the dock at Augies on Eagle Mountain. I was rigged for catfish with cut bait on 2 lines and 1 live perch on another. My rod with the perch started going sideways on the dock, I thought a good sized catfish was on the other end but it turned out to be a 4 1/2 pound bass. Then I got cold and called it a day. Worth it.

I would say that is a good creek and lots of fun.

Hey KG are the catfish within reach of bank fishermen on Tawakoni now? My pb 48 pound Blue came from the state park campground there.

Looking forward to having the same conditions after the predicted rain tonight. The creek has never looked better. Going out today to try out my new rod mount on the kayak, waiting for delivery of a matching mount for the other side so I can drift two lines. Last night I hit Benbrook from 9:00 to 11:00 PM and found 4 to 5 inch shad. Beautiful bait, but the wind was blowing 20 to 25 mph and I didn't get a nibble.
Tight lines everyone!!

Only 5 species today. Crappie, Gar, Sandies, Hybrid, Tiny Channel. It was a beautiful day on the Creek. Got to chat a little with two oldtimers who were jigging the brushpile close to me. They were a hoot, ragging on each other for getting hung up and catching a few and having a good time. When I say oldtimer, I have to add that I'm 62 so oldtimer is relative. grin

Conditions should be ideal to possibly repeat the 7 specie day after this decent rainfall. Right now I'm trying a new recipe on a big batch of belly meat. Mayo, panko breadcrumbs, lemon, garlic. Smells delicious.

Yep pretty tasty and no big clean up. smile

I'm posting this for the bank guys who have been trying hard but not finding them. For a week now the shad have been spawning at the shoreline at Benbrook and if you're there at sunrise with a slip bobber and minnows or small shad you will have a blast. The conditions should hold for a while longer but not much. Good luck and file a report if it works out for you. Expect to catch Crappie, Large Mouth, Sandbass, and Yellow Bass, and an occasional Channel Cat.
