2016 - What did you tie this week? - 01/18/16 03:07 AM

Anybody been tying this year?

I have a drying wheel full of Clouser's this evening. Not very fancy, but fun to tie. smile

2016 is a blank slate for trying so far. I agree that it's soothing to tie simple, familiar patterns; patterns that we have an affinity for.

Great ties!!! Bring them down here Rex. We can catch a bundle of white bass on those. If we don't lose them to the lure eating Yeagua monster. roflmao

Great flies RexW. I have a few that are already dry. Can't have too many Clousers this time of year or shad fly.

What are the advantages of tying a clouser on a 90 degree jig hook compared to a straight hook ????

none I can think of since the eyes will turn the fly hook point up on a straight hook.-p-

I don't really care who wins this game, so, here's a quick tie for each of them.

(First time to use UNI-Stretch. I like normal floss better.)

For Denver:

For Carolina:

I don't use 90 degree hooks, but I do like using 60 degree hooks. They swim better than 90 degree hooks and I can bounce them through the rocks in Texoma with fewer snags than straight hooks. George got me hooked on using them.

They are just ones I made for the llano River. That gray crawfish looking one has been really good lately. Or oarnge poppers.

All these are for my local bays and marshes. Shrimp has been a great producer of reds, trout and flounder. Baitfish pattern is a good open water option for speckled trout. The other two work great up shallow for reds, drum, etc

Llano was muddy so I tied a bunch of these for the Frio River, they liked the more natural colors Saturday. Fished two crossings on the paddle board. Not many people and the river was clear.

Re: 2016 - What did you tie this week? - 06/26/16 02:34 AM

Pearow, it's funny you should mention white/black legs. When I pulled materials yesterday, I had to search for the two tone legs and the only version I could find was the Orange/black. I was putting everything away a few minutes ago and I discovered that I have several different color combinations leg materials. Although, I still don't know why I thought putting rubber legs and dubbing together in the same box was a good idea??? hmmm

No wonder I couldn't find it yesterday...

Here's a different version of a foam hopper. Very similar tying process as the GFA pattern.

Dollar General yellow puffer worm on #12 streamer hook, with 1/8"gold bead, small pearl chenille, and some black hackle. Hardest part was attaching the squirmy worm material to the hook and keeping it in line. I ran the hook thru the worm and then glued it down to the shank. I plan do a number of different color variations of this squirmy worm jig fly.

Nice, those ought to catch bluegill and crappie. I guess I'll be heading to Dollar General soon. Thanks for sharing.

Extra long squirmy wormy flies on a #6 hook. Hoping these will be more appealing to the bass. I think I may put together something for specs and flounder too. I need to test these out first and then implement improvements as needed.

Nice fly. They work well don't they?

Threading the "worm" on the hook straight is not fun. I've seen a couple of options for doing it. One is to heat your bodkin up and lay it on the worm to melt a groove into the plastic. Then put the hook in the groove and super glue it in place (wrap some thread around the hook shank and the glue will hold better.) Another option is to use an x-acto knife or razor blade to cut a shallow groove in the worm (be careful if you try this method.)

Good looking flies. smile

I applied head cement to the hook shank on the first batch and that didn't hold the worm in place. I'm using super glue on top of a thread wrapped shank and that seems to hold the worm in place better. I haven't field tested these longer worms, but plan to use them to target largemouth bass. I like to tie, try and then modify.

Re: 2016 - What did you tie this week? - 07/22/16 09:08 PM

I tie the same smaller version using the sili worms material. I put a layer of thread on feed the hook threw the center of the sili worm material for about a 1/4" depending on the hook size. Add a drop of superglue to the butt end of the thread and slide the worm material over the thread and superglue. Most end up with no tail before the thread and glue give out.

Re: 2016 - What did you tie this week? - 07/24/16 05:11 PM

another method is to use a razor blade to cut a groove; insert the hook covered with thread and super glue; close the slit and use a small flame to seal the cut, being careful not to burn it too much; the worm will melt around the hook slit; takes a little practice and some are ruined-p-
