Realistics III The Mayfly

Realistics III The Mayfly - 01/15/14 11:45 PM

Well as spring is just around the corner I thought it would be in order to tie up a Mayfly.
In the rivers in England when these beauties hatch they call it "duffers fortnight ( two weeks)" as it is easy to take trout on a mayfly pattern as they hatch so abundantly
I can supply a recipe if anyone would like

That's sweet looking. I'd be afraid to put it in the water.

Thanks Paul and Kirk
The recipe is fairly simple in the materials it is the time to tie that's the problem I would not fish this because of the effort in the tie. looks great though mounted in a small glass dome. I have done a few of those in the past, makes a great gift for the fly fisherman.
Materials used
Hook short shank size 14
Body: raffine tied in sections and built up with thread before each section is made to create the segmentation, then colored with a marker
Tails three fine fibers from a porcupine ( I swear he didn't feel a thing!!!) lol
Wings are very thin acetate sheet marked out and then (this is the long part and tedious) the veins are scribed onto the acetate with a bodkin, then run over quickly with a marker pen and then wiped off, this makes the color stay in the scribed lines. the wings are then cut out
eyes burnt fine mono
Legs very fine hand broom bristles burnt to shape
Hope this helps, if anyone is interested in seeing the wings made drop by and see me at the GRUT fest later this month or the event at New Braunfels in June
