Strange bug

Strange bug - 05/26/20 01:07 AM

My first floating foam-popping-bug-fly. I made this after seeing a very similar bug crawling around a creek by my house after the rain this morning. I don’t have any idea what it is, but it sort of looked like a dragonfly with it’s wings folded down to the body or something along those lines. I read something that said to catch a lot of fish with home made lures, you must imitate insects and small creatures that you find around the areas you fish. So this was my first opportunity to give it a try. Anyone have any idea as to what it could be? I wish I had a camera with me but I was just out doing my AM walk. It did have some big pinchers on the front. Strange looking bug. It was kind of like a flying ant but about 3 1/2 inches long.

I found it on the net.... It's called a dobsonfly. This is what that nasty bug actually looked like.

I did pretty good for a newbie, from memory, with limited materials, or at least that's my opinion lol.

I’ve seen one of these at my old job last year. They’re creepy looking bugs. It takes them like 15 years to get to this stage.

Match the Hatch. You should check out the hatch charts.

It will be interesting to know how good of a job it does at attracting fish. Let us know.

For top water there are plenty of spiders and grasshoppers in the creeks. There are plenty of easy to tie spider patterns. I have issues with grasshopper patterns as they usually want to lay on their side when I tie them grin I usually just tie some tan llano bugs to imitate the millions of little tan grasshoppers in the creeks in summer. Or purchase some Raineys grasshoppers.

x2
dobson fly, stone fly, full grown helgramite
now would be a good time to fish this fly, they usually require cleaner moving water
and yes they do bite

nice tie it should work
