minnow traps vs cast nets - 10/17/13 04:37 AM

Just want to know everyone's opinions on minnow traps vs cast nets. Which are more productive, ease of use, cost (purchase/upkeep)?

Don't waste your money on minnow trap. I have used different trap and non of them really work. I have used cast net and it is much more effective. What kind of bait fish you are trying to catch? Shad or minnow ?

Shad, minnow, and pinfish/bluegills, or whatever the fish are biting really

I have one that I made myself that works good for perch, bluegill, n sunfish but don't think it will catch shad. If there is a way I like to know that way I can save my arm from swinging that heavy net.... thumb

Stick with cast nets you will catch your bait way faster than with a minnow trap.

In open water that's free of obstructions, a throw net is best.
However, a trap comes in handy in places that will snag a net.
I'd get both.

Cast nets are the way to go. Ive used minnow traps before with little luck. used to fish with minnows, again with little luck. Cast nets catch everything you will need for bait. I fiSh for cats, esp blues.HTH
TIGHT LINES!

Real cat bait wont fit in a "legal" minnow trap
Take a mess of kids out perch jerking and get all the bait you need
with minimal efforts,PATIENCE may be required . . . . . .

My re: was to the OP
I use a cast net 4-5 times(days) every week, more often then not its 7 days per week the last few years.
My business runs its self so the boss fish's everyday smile
Still nothing better then perch jerking with a mess of kids after the hunt for the big'uns is over for the day.
