Bulkhead fishing on Conroe???? - 03/07/05 09:58 PM
Isn't it getting close to time for the catfish to start moving up near the bulkheads?? Or am I about a month early??

You are early but I seriously doubt a month early.
We took a look Saturday and the shad were not there.
We are going to try it again on the 19th. I'd be surprised if it is not on by then.

I've heard St. Patrick's day is a good rule of thumb.

They follow the bait source. That being shad.

The St. Patrick's Day rule of thumb only applies to the Irish shad

I gave em a try yesterday. Only caught 10. I tried all different depths. Didn't get a nibble in water less than 8 ft. The majority of the fish came 21-33 ft of water. They're at least 2 weeks away from being up on the Bulkheads. Just my $.02.

I catch them year around on bulkheads around Conroe. The bigger the dock (shade) the better.

I'm thinking about giving the bulkheads a shot this weekend. Has anyone had any luck?

It's like a seawall, but in the lake. A lot of the banks at conroe have bulkheads.

I fished them last weekend, and ended up with 10 Cats, and 5 White Bass. Everything I caught was in 8 ft of water or less.

Don't tell me that Joe... I'm gonna be trying the bulkheads tomorrow... right behind this front. I guess if the're not there we'll get the boat out & go deeper, but i still haven't made my jugs yet!

Good luck.
Take a redfish rod with a clicker reel on it and toss it way out on the deep water side of the boat.
Had several great hybrid runs on the last trip and caught a white.

Couldn't even buy a bite this morning... the shad were gone from the bulkhead... i'm guessing the front drove them deeper. We tried deeper, but had trouble staying on a spot with the wind up today. Managed to get a few dozen shad on the bulkhead around noon (with a little help from some range cubes spread earlier) & took them up to the bridge. Caught 10 cats (all blues), a big perch, and about 20 yellow bass... kept about 5-6 of the bigger ones to see if they're worth keeping in the future. All but one of the fish came between 2pm & 4pm when we had to leave. Most of the bite was after 3pm.
Had one fish i think was a hybrid - never saw it... my drag was set pretty tight -- none of the cats took any drag... this one fish was stripping line like it was nothing. after a few minutes i had it within about 5 ft of the surface & it disappeared... left me my sinker & hook, just came unbuttoned. i was spitting nails... guess i'll just have to get that one another day!
slow day, but beat working!

It has been a weird bulkhead bite so far this year, on and off.
Sounds like a hybrid...they are fun!
The yellow bass are GREAT table fare. I like 'em as much or possible more than bluegills and that is saying something.
