Rigging my new (to me) catfish boat

Rigging my new (to me) catfish boat - 05/16/21 09:12 PM

Here is my new boat.

[Linked Image]

2002 14 ft Alumacraft with a front casting deck and enclosed storage, 2002 home made tilt trailer, 2017 Suzuki 20 hp, new Minn Kota, Lowrance Hook 2 4X, 2 anchors and 8 clamp on rod holders. Not too bad for an under $3,500 pond hopper. In my opinion anyway. Now all I need is one dry day to install the lights, fishfinder, & trolling motor and I'll be heading to the lake.

I'll be adding an anchor trolley system, a casting seat up front, interior and exterior LED lights, and an 8 foot pole anchor/push pole..

You'll be able to get into some tight fishing places that bigger boats can't, and your fuel economy oughta be phenomenal

Yep sorta like a large kayak.... Heck my kayak is 8" longer than this one lol! That and it's an older aluminum boat and the hull is in great shape. If you bang it, it sounds like a dull thud. Rather than like a trash can lid like some of the new boats do. The boat and I are fast becoming great friends. The fella that sold it to me said it gets between 20 and 25 mph and that he could fish for 2 solid days on one 3 gal tank of fuel. Even so, I upgraded to a new 6 gal tank.

Congratulations some of my best memories were running trot line with my two brothers when I was a kid. Our boat was not near this nice it had a 5 hp sea king motor from mongrary wards. All three of us work as a fishing store in Dallas back in the 70 early 80 so we spent almost every penny on fishing tackle

Cool boat, wish I had a boat just like that, to get up in skinny waters. Been keeping my eyes open, but haven't found the right one yet.

I kept my eyes open on Craigslist and found this one in Roundrock. With a base price of around $3500 and about $500 worth of upgrades and registrations, I now have a pretty good lil fishing boat. Since the original post I added 2 camo wide clam shell seats (pure comfort). The casting deck is great for fly fishing and polling shallow water with an 8' pole. I may change to a 12 foot push pole since sometimes 8' leaves you wishing for just a little more. I may take her to the coastal flats south of Galveston for some reds and trout action real soon. After my time in the Navy, I miss living on the coast.

My first boat was a bathtub size plastic 12 foot Sears Game Fisher with a 9.9 hp Sears outboard. It did not look like much, it couldn't carry much more than me a pole and a small tackle box, and it was miserably slow. With that said, it was the best running boat I have ever had. I used to fish Calaveras hot water discharge and it only took an hour to get there or back from the boat launch. That was back in the days when you could catch a 7 to 8 lb Corvina regularly by the bridge1986-1990 era. Lots of great memories from back then.
