Cowhouse Creek at East Range Road

Cowhouse Creek at East Range Road - 09/29/20 01:39 AM

Has anyone fished Cowhouse Creek at East Range Road on Fort Hood lately? I'm planning on heading out there for some bank fishing in the AM tomorrow. It's been over 40 years since my last trip to that spot but I used to do pretty ok out there (except when the tanks from Fort Hood used to crash into and across the creek). I was recently told that the flathead and channel cats have been semi plentiful there I'm gonna see if the folks I spoke to were correct or not. That and it will be interesting to see What it looks like out there. I looked at a satellite picture of the area and from what I can see, it looks nothing near what it did back in the late 1970s. Also can anyone tell me if there any good spots to launch a Kayak out there anymore. I did some of my best crappie fishing in that area when I was still a teenager. I bet it will be a great spot during the white run in the spring. At least it looks that way from the satellite map I found online.

I'm willing to bet not too many people fish there. That's for sure.

I fished there in the Spring, the banks were VERY Muddy, the water was muddy, the parking area was muddy, that slick thick clay type of mud that is hard to get off. Be careful you can slide down the bank pretty easily. Saw 3 other people fishing for several hours, did not see anyone catch anything to include me. As I was driving back to Belton, still on the base before getting to BLORA a deer ran smack into the side of my truck at full speed, required complete replacement of both driver and rear doors on that side. A month later I got in my 17 ft alumacraft and very slowly worked my way up to sight of that bridge from the main lake. I fished on the way there with no luck. saw activity always near the banks, but had no luck. Let us know how it goes.

I went there and the water was clear very shallow. I could walk across the creek and not get my knees wet. I saw some small bluegills, bass, and needle nose gar. I tried fly fishing but gave up when I caught my second 3" shiner minnow. I was going to go to BLORA but was so disgusted I just came home. I remember when an armored tank could float across the creek.. Now it would hardly wet the tracks. The topography in the area has definitely changed for the worse in 40 years. Maybe I'll try yaking the Lampasas river around I-35 in the morning. I have been told fishing is pretty good in the deeper pools just before and just after the I35 bridge. But then again I was told that Cowhouse Creek was a viable option and that got me where I am today... On the couch wishing I was fishing
