Depends on how you classify or set boundaries for North Texas. As for me, I would say Lake Limestone, maybe that's because its upstream or north of where I live. Yellows are abundant here, whether you are fishing up at the top, above the bridge after the river feeds in, in Big Creek, at the bottom corner (Near Corner for me), in the Running Branch No Wake Zone, or just left coming out of Running Branch No Wake Zone. So far the Lake record was 107 pounds on a throwline.

While my biggest to date is a 57 pounder, my friends (who have also used my Catfish Calendar, as to the Yellows) have caught up to 75 pounds, and plenty of 62 pounders. I know of one lady who caught a 92 pounder, not far from where I, Jeff, and James, have been trying to catch "The Giant". I estimate it is a male & between 115 to 150 pounder. It comes thru on its consistent trail (path) like a tractor, plowing thru, never giving. It stops from time to time to say Hi, then off again it goes.

Richland Chambers comes into this as very good to excellent, Fairfield at one time was top notch-I caught 16 one night on R&R. Aquila is one of the better lakes I've been told by an old time trotliner. Most central to east Texas lakes have an abundance of flathead, Just not a lot of successful flathead fishermen anymore. I guess just a dying breed and it can be a very slow go if you R&R fish flathead. I've heard of a fisherman who wrote a book on flathead fishing.

I realize Jackie is the man on cedar Creek but it is a great flathead lake in my fishing. I mostly fish for channel cats with Stubbys cheese bait but when I specifically target blue and flathead catfish I use shad. My pb which is not huge is a 32 pound flat caught on Cedar Creek. I caught it on cut shad on a clay hump in the lake. When I was younger I had more patience for work like using cast nets. To be honest after strokes physically cast nets are more tough than they once were. It has been my experience that fishing all night with a few cool ones to drink with cut or live shad seemed to be the best way to get flatheads. I really am not any kind of expert on flats and maybe I was lucky to get a few to commit suicide.

Thank you for the replies. I read an article recently about targeting numbers of eater size flatheads by using slip bobber rigs. Sounded really interesting so wanted to try it on a lake with good numbers.

Lynn, I have a friend who caught a 81 pounder on Lake Limestone about 15 years ago. One heck of a yellow cat!
