Any advice for a new lake? Mineral Wells

Any advice for a new lake? Mineral Wells - 06/26/20 04:50 PM

So my mom and step dad are going camping out there this weekend and invited us along. I've never been there before. Yall have any advice? We'll be bank fishing.

From what I can tell it looks like a pretty shallow lake. No deeper than about 20-25ft? The tpwd site shows only channel cats in there. Is that right? If so I wont bother taking any of my frozen blue gill.

Cut bluegill chunks are excellent bait for channel cats. I cut mine into 1” wide strips from the dorsal fin to the belly.

Yes, channel cats. I had easy luck there using cut hot dogs on a treble hook under a cork. Throw out a handful of dog food to call them in (or 'cat food' of course). It's a great state park. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

When it was low we'd go bank fish it at night and catch 4-5 flatheads a night. Idk how it'd fish like that now, but I'd definitely have some live perch on stout tackle, kickin' out there.

Forgot to report back, sorry for the delay.

Didn't have much luck with catfish but did manage 3 eaters Sunday afternoon on my light tackle using worms. Got one nice hit Saturday night on a bluegill head but nothing else.

The real action was crappie. Saturday night we got into them real good off one of the piers with a lantern hanging just above the water. I would guess between the 2 of us we caught about 50 and kept 17. Ran out of minnows about half way through the night then kept catching them with jigs until they slowed way down at 2am.

Most of the ones we through back were over 9.5". Only a couple were little 6" dinks. But at the same time the biggest was only about 11.5" so none were huge. Most of the keepers were 10.25". I don't know that I've ever seen such a narrow range of sizes when I've caught that many crappie. Usually there's a couple nice 12-15 inchers mixed in. But oh well, it was blast.
