Range cubes vs Cattle cubes?

Picked up a bag of Cattle Cubes (for baiting out a hole) because they were older and cheaper than the bags of Range Cubes. Being older I thought they might dissolve better. Is there any difference between the two? If so, does one attract fish better than the other?

They are the same thing. Some people call them range some call them cattle. What percentage of protein did you get? Sometimes less than 20% protein and they tend to float. 20% or more tend to sink.

Thanks Blue Blazer. Bag says 20% protein so I guess I'm good. Otherwise I'd put them in a fish basket (or similar) and sink the basket.

range cubes are short term. Get a 5 gallon bucket and some cotton seed meal, put a beer on it and some water, let it sit a couple of days to sour, then drop it in a likely spot. It will last couple of weeks. Put a brick in the bottom so it sinks. Everytime you go fishing there drop another one. I even use it on stripers and whites

Thanks, I'm only needing it as a short term-emergency bail out option for one day. Taking a group of kids out for sandbass on Grapevine tomorrow and if we can't find those, we'll bait out a couple of holes with the range cubes and see if we can catch some cats or carp. Attention spans aren't going to last too long tomorrow!

Assuming the bucket is then sealed before dropping It. And has holes drilled in. How many, and how big are the holes for it to last that long?

I would use 40% range cubes. They stayed together better.

The others dissipate too fast for some.

Well, as a follow up to my original post, the cattle cubes sank great. Threw a handful out in two different spots, waited, and waited, and waited. One 2lb channel to show for the efforts. Using cheese bait. We were in Twin Coves on Grapevine fishing the creek channel in the timber. Not the ideal time of day (around noon) but I thought we could have caught more. Which makes me ask a second question-on a lake like Grapevine, how much undertow/current is there near the bottom of the lake? Meaning, if I drop a handful of cubes straight down, will the current carry them away from the boat? Or will the current carry the particles away as the cubes disintegrate?

I threw a cube into shallow water as an experiment where I could see the bottom up to a couple of feet, and watched as dozens of sunfish attacked the cube, and that cube lasted about 5 min. and it was gone. YMMV.

Hmm, Im gonna try that. I dropped some in a panty hose out in Lake Pat in a couple of spots. Hopefully it will last longer. We dropped them yesterday, and are going to fish the thursday night. Also Threw out some loose handfulls in some spots. I used 38% cottonseed cake cubes. I will let you know how I do.

Don't you consider it littering to throw so many 5 gallon buckets in the lake? Reading your instructions carefully, you are saying to drop the bucket into the lake!

That’s what I was thinking. All the beer I have seen for sale is pasteurized with no live cultures. Home brew may have some or throw a packet of yeast in there.
