Juggin': a documentary series?

Juggin': a documentary series? - 05/26/18 09:24 PM

I'm thinking of shooting a documentary series on jug fishing. I was thinking of coming at from a historical perspective as it is one of the few traditional, artisanal forms of fishing still in wide practice today.

In planning a three part series where are some questions I thought were interesting to answer:

Part I: Where did jug fishing come from? What are it's origins? how is it practiced today?

Part II: It is destructive? Is it over done? Can it be practised sensibly with conservation in mind?

Part III: Is it fun? Is it challenging? Why is appealing to so many people?

I figure there are plenty of videos on how to make jugs, how to jug fish. I want to do a documentary-style series to vindicate the practice and showcase it as a last standing artisanal method that should be preserved for future generations.

I want to know what you fellas think? What do you think should or shouldn't be including is such a series?

Different styles, rigging, possibilities, and so on. Such as jugs with spray foam inside, and so on.

Plus safety tips on running in case you have a monster asleep or lurking awaiting to take you for a ride. One friend got ripped by hooks as a giant Blue woke up & took off. As he had laid the line by his feet on the deck of the boat. When it woke up, it yanked the line from his hand, then all that line beside his feet started flying away. It literally ripped open flesh as the leaders with hooks came by. Luckily, it did not catch him good enough to take his leg & him overboard. He estimated it was about a 60 pounder. And I am sure he did not have his life jacket on. I think that was Memorial Day weekend 2002 that he came by to show me his battle wounds. It was not a pretty sight.

thx, that was one thing I was afraid of with my handlines. That the main reason I just target bait with the handline and go for big cats on the jugs.

I use a telescoping hook pole to grab the line on my jugs. It make it easier to run the jugs by yourself.

thx, rd. Is it like a gaff or just a broom stick handle?

Willie, It's real similar to a gaff with rubber coated hook. I'll post a pic on here in a little while.

Hey Willie, this is almost exactly like the hook pole that I use to hook my jug lines.

Go to Lowe's (or HD), and get a 3' one inch diameter dowel rod. Head over to hardware section and buy a hook that is used to hang bicycles on garage walls (rubber coated). Mine fits in the rod holders, next to the net.

I'm headed to Guntersville this weekend. I'm planning on keeping those small perch and trying that salted perch bait recipe for catfish next time. I'll let you know how it goes.

as a Long Time Jugger, I think this is great, the feeling you get from chasing down an Bobbing Jug, is to others, just like reeling in a big fish. I would make sure you cover some Safety tips. I have caught several Large fish on Jugs with others in the boat, and safety is important. you have many hooks instead of just one, and you have a Big fish pulling with many hooks, can be a Bad day.
I think styles of Jugging as in Weighted and non weighted, would be very cool. Good luck and I look forward to viewing.
