Let's talk swivels.

So I've never thought about this until now but I'm wondering about swivel size. I always buy bigger swivels for my Sante Cooper rig but I've never considered why I choose the bigger ones. Surely the bigger ones are stronger but does it really matter? Have any of yall had a swivel break from a big fish? I always use heavy braid (50+ lbs), I would think the line would always break before the swivel does. Are there any benefits to a bigger swivel that I'm missing? What are yall's thoughts on this?

On my Trotlines, Juglines, and Throwlines, I use either 3/0 Brass Barrel Swivels (not sure of rating) or Crane 4/0 SS swivels (rating is 175 pounds). This past weekend when the "Giant" hit, it popped the #36 green braided cord above the hook as it took off. But the Crane 4/0 SS swivel was intact. I have had nothing yet that broke either barrel swivel. Note that neither has the clips (as I have had the clips open up on the 3/0 Brass barrel swivels)-- I was using them on the end of the leader for the small eye Kahle hooks.

Also, I have had 3/0 three way brass swivels snap off (by the "Giant"). So I do not use them any more.

I'm surprised they aren't marketing these for earrings. Put one in each ear, clip on a couple of red and white bobbers, and you'd be the best dressed man on the lake.

I think a bigger stronger swivel is necessary if you cast hard with a heavy sinker. Ive broken a swivel trying to heave 8 n bait once but never fighting a fish. I get big SPRO swivels now & never had an issue.
