Question for Rod-n-Reelers

I was just wondering about some braided cord for R-n-R I got the other day at Wal-Mart. It is SpiderWire #SCS65G-125 Stealth - Braid Moss Green 65 lb. 125 yard. But in the finer print below I noticed later (after getting home)- 17 lb. Test Dia. UPC #0-22021-60084-7

Is this 65# test or just 17# test, as to what we normally refer to as test poundage of our catch for that line (or safe load, like on rope)?

I was wanting some high test pound (50# or higher) braid that would fit thru eyelets on Eagle Claw Kahle hooks. My standard size on my leader lines (for set lines) is size 36 green, 3 strand twist or braided.

And I really prefer not to use monofilament.

65 lb rated but the diameter of 17 lb mono.......they add that because Reel capacities are in mono -ex:100 yds of 10 lb mono. So you can put the same amount of that Braid as you could 17 lb mono.

That Spiderwire produces the best backlashes you'll ever see! I did like the sensitivity when I tried it but I prefer a few other braids over the S.W.. 17# is the diameter as previously mentioned.

Oh! OK! Thanks! Guess it's a keeper, as 17# test would be way too low. Last time I used Kahle hooks, I used 3/0 Brass Barrel Swivels with a clasp. A few hooks were MIA as the clips (clasps) got pulled out.

Snaps are going to be bad unless a) they're a certain type of trotlines snap (forget which one, but there's one design that is stronger than the rest) or B) you spend some money on heavy duty coastlock Snaps in the SWELLING section that are rated at near 300 lbs and cost a couple bucks each.

If you want to test your setup, tie a loop to your trailer hitch, then hook up your snap to that and pull. Will need to wrap the line around a board or pipe to hold onto to pull with. And pull slow and steady to avoid such serious snap back when it gives away. You'd be surprised how easy any kind of cheaper snap swivel will come apart. Barrels will deform fairly quickly but hold alot before giving out completely.

When I load a new spool of braid, I attach a 3oz weight and fling that thing as far as I can. Reel. Repeat. Do this at least 5 times to properly seat the line in the spool. It is the only way I know to reduce (not eliminate) backlash.

I normally use size 36 green 3 strand twist or braided for my leader lines for set lines. However, the Eagle Claw Kahle hooks present a problem- very small eyelet. That is the reason I had used some 3/0 Brass Barrel Swivels with the snap (clasp), as the clasp went thru the Kahle eyelet easily.

However, I use size 3/0 Barrel Brass or 4/0 SS swivels, I have not had one swivel break. Up to 60# Op & 40# Blue. Except with the 3/0 Brass 3-way swivels. I figure it was "The Giant" that snapped it (3 way), as that leader was in its extended path. The time I used the Kahle, many snaps were open & Kahle hook was gone. This is why I was going to try the option of some very small braid to use as a leader since they should go thru the eyelet with ease, even if doubled or tripled.

When I 1st spool that braid and get in the boat i let out all the braid line with a 4oz sinker attached then reel it in. I learned that from ole Jeffery at Teamcatfish..it gets the line wet with pressure on it for a nice even retrieve on the spool then you can cast the fire out of it.....It does work for me
