Opened the VST on the Merc 60HP

Opened the VST on the Merc 60HP - 06/19/21 08:39 PM

Have narrowed down my troubles to this area, and if not, knew I'd never be satisfied unless I looked. The first picture is what it looked like when it was first opened. The second was when it was clean. I was hesitant to even start, but I'd had it in the shop already, they busy, etc. In actuality, it's not that big of a deal if you've messed with carbs any. I pulled the pressure regulator and the screen under it was plugged. The bypass hose was hard and brittle and the regulator o ring was cracked. I ordered a new high pressure pump, some injection hose clamps, and a submersible hose for the the bypass hose. I found an o ring at a local shop for the regulator. The pump should be in today and the rest on Monday. If it doesn't fix it, it sure needed it.

The pump came in today. Notice the screen on the new pump and lack there of on the old. Wonder what that's all about. The dealer said to be sure and clean the pump screen. What screen?

It almost looks like the screen may have been sucked inside of the pump on the left. There is no way that this will not help your motor run better. It may not fix the problem you have, but I bet it will. Makes you feel good to fix things.

All back together. Had to wait for a second pump after I noticed a hole in the screen. You can see the hole in the picture I took earlier. Now just need the rain to stop to install and test. [Linked Image]

Well did the first fire up and had a fuel leak at a hose. Stopped that and noticed a leak at the top of the little black block mounted on the left of the vst. That little guy is expensive so pulled it and cleaned the o rings. Leak stopped. Getting an intermittent alarm. Sometimes every 20 secs. Sometimes doesn't go off for two minutes or more. One thought is water in fuel. But some sensor isn't happy. Runs good though. Next will be to take it out for a run and put it under a load.

Got a chance to run the boat and made several wot runs. Ran great. Best ever. Decided to run another one and lost fuel. Motor didn't die though, but it would no longer run at wot without starving for fuel. Last thing to change so pulled the fuel pump today and cracked it open. Pretty sure this was a main culprit. The diaphragm was falling apart. There's no filter between the pump and the vst, so it makes sense that chunks were getting into the vst from the fuel pump. New pump and high pressure filter here Monday. Blew line out from pump to vst and it was clear. Drained the vst and it was clear. May have it now. [Linked Image]

Ok. So I received the new pump and high pressure filter and installed them yesterday. Start up was good with no leaks. Next step will be to go on the water and test under load. I guess the point of this thread is that if you have a mechanical aptitude, you can do some things yourself. In my case, I had already dumped bucks to the service dept. and decided to run it out myself. I did not want to break into the vst, but I'm glad I did. Same with the fuel pump. Youtube is your friend. smile

Managed to get on the water and all seems fine. Ran the boat at 3200 rpm for about seven miles then 4200 for another five and then wot trimmed to 5000 rpm for seven or eight miles. I think we are good to go.
