PK Water Clarity

PK Water Clarity - 06/08/16 03:34 AM

I am trying to decide if I want to make the 1.5 hour run to
PK or just fish my local lake this weekend. I was originally planning to go to PK but I am concerned with the condition of the water. Can someone tell me the condition of the water. Do you think the water will clear up any by Saturday? I was plannin to put in at South D&D and fish the lower part of the lake.

I have not been on PK since March so I am going to have to work the rust off. If I make the trip down to PK I plan to start at the point across from the girls scout camp, and after that I do not really have a plan yet. I figure most the spots I would normally fish on the upper end will have pretty dirty water. If anyone is willing to provide some guidance on areas and artificial bait that has been producing the last few weeks I would appreciate it.

I hear it is pretty bad. They had 3 gates open and two floating gates for several days. That was movine ALOT of dirty water from the north end down to the south.

I texted my cousin who is next door to me in Gaines Bend a few mins ago. He's at the lake and said Chocolate Milk.... I will be there Thursday through the weekend. Hopefully the mud settles a little.

While I was having coffee on my deck I noticed that the color of Neely Slough matched the color of my coffee almost exactly.

I figure it's a week or more before the lake will be clear enough for me to catch bait. I was able to catch a few when I had bait but after three hours of looking and throwing I had less than a dozen. Normally, bait is one throw, count out three dozen and throw the rest back.

so all the lake is chocolate milk?

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/09/16 02:23 AM

Catching all the bait in one throw is really good on pk.

Thanks for updates on the water condition. Think I am going to hold off until next weekend before I run down to PK. May do some yard work Saturday and take my Dad out to lake Arrowhead Sunday to catch some sand bass.

Captiancam: as an old guy with a bad shoulder my plan is always to see them in clear shallow water and ease the boat alongside slowly and drop the net over them.

Can't do it in this lake today. We don't have 6 inch visibility:

Kid Striper and myself fished PK on Wednesday, bait catching has never been easier. Water clarity at Neely's was close to terrible and we caught numerous short Stripers and some dink sandies. Marked good fish, no takers. PK fishin report shows that Neely's has gotten worse ! The majority of the fish marked were about 8 to 12 feet from the surface. Top water at night ???? Full moon of course.

Its going to take a while for that to clear up. We are going to be there in 10 days. Hopefully it will be better by then. Thanks for the pics TCK.

I crossed the Brazos at South Bend today and it had pretty good flow still. They are only letting a trickle out, so if we continue with sunshine and no more rain, a couple of weeks will be better.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/15/16 01:40 AM

I was there this weekend and it was as muddy as it's been in the last 30 years. I'm on the south end of the lake and there is about 6" visibility. I couldn't even see my green lights at night so we didn't even wet a line.

That's depressing frown 10 of us are scheduled to camp at Rock Creek this weekend and we were gonna give em heck. Looks like fishing will be super tough.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/15/16 03:43 PM

TXfour. Gp up rock creek as far as you can and you will find clear water where the creek comes in. Should be some nice LM bass and some perch there. Not much, but that will likely be the best bet for you.

I'm sick of rain and not getting to fish.

My family and I are going to visit some friends the weekend of July 4th. He's not a fisherman so he said it was Ok if I brought my boat. About to start doing some research I guess since I don't know what all these places are called. smile

That's surely what it looks like. If it looks like that when we go I will probably leave my boat at home and save my gas for Ray Hubbard. At least I know where the fish are there.

I second that. Chocolate Milt in neely Slough. I figure two weeks until I can fish the lake.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/17/16 09:00 AM

Chocolate milk near the dam. It's more clear than last weekend but still chocolate milk. It was extra chocolaty nuts

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/17/16 11:14 AM

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/19/16 12:42 PM

I'm guessing it's too soon to ask, but I will anyway. Have you PK guys seen any of the dirty water starting to settle out yet?

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/19/16 01:16 PM

It's a little better, 6" visibility near the dam. We drifted live shad and had a tough day as expected. Give it a couple of weeks. The smell of hydrogen sulfide was prominent in the area also.

yesterday water

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/19/16 04:28 PM

The hydrogen sulfide is horrendous. Even below the dam. What causes that?

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/20/16 11:59 AM

I wish I could wait a couple of weeks. Headed there Thursday. Hopefully the rotten egg smell has died by then and the fishing will just suk. hammer

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/20/16 03:30 PM

I was there Friday and Saturday and there is clearer water if you know where to go. The very back's of Rock,Cedar, and Caddo are great. If you are interested in catching good sized sand bass and small striper then Cedar past the last buoy marker is your best bet. Lot's of activity there. Small bass are in all 3 creeks. Have a great weekend.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/20/16 03:43 PM

It has been years since I have seen the whole lake a PK that muddy. I knew it was muddy when they had the flood gates open and the river was staying real muddy. Usually if the river is muddy from recent rains and they open a flood gate a couple of days after the rain, the river will clear up, this time it did not. Now since the gates have been shut, I think they are letting water out thru the COC (Controlled Outlet Conduit) and the water down that deep at the dam is clear so the river has cleared up nicely below PK.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/20/16 03:56 PM

That's good to know Tom. I may have to fish the river next time out. I just cant stand to fish muddy water. I would have never bought a lake house on PK if the water was not pretty. PK spoils you.

That is correct...and the water there is clearer. However, you better have a gas mask.

Any update on the water clarity?

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/28/16 02:57 PM

Was there this weekend. We stayed in the Possum Hollow area. The backs of the creeks are clearing up a little but the main lake is chocolate milk. We caught some schooling whites and small black bass. It was a good trip but the water doesnt help.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/28/16 04:40 PM

I was on the lake Yesterday. Still very stained. There's a big wad of stuff down about 15 feet according to my fish finder. Will take a couple weeks for it to sink to the bottom. In the main lake I still see lots of flotsam on top of the water.

I'm seeing some top water action on the lake from my balcony. Might just be sand bass though. I didn't fish this past week the lake was so ugly.

Re: PK Water Clarity - 06/29/16 05:10 PM

I sure was hoping it would be cleared up before this Friday. Looks like I will load a cooler and troll some Hellbenders and hope I find some. I think I am more excited about getting out of the office than anything. banana cheers fish

How's the water looking after this last rain storm?
Posted By: PKfishin

Re: PK Water Clarity - 07/06/16 04:25 PM

Was clear enough to swim this past week by the dam. I could see my feet. Didn't fish because my wife had friends out and wanted a boat tour. Didn't mark many fish in Neely. Spots that I had been catching one right after another were bare. Once the lake clears up I have some major scouting to do to find bait and fish.

It's getting better. Caught a bunch of Stripers today on shad. Kept 7 and two sandbass.
Clear water is from South DD towards dam. Didn't make it to the dam.

That's great news. I'll be going out Monday. That will be my first fishing trip on PK in several weeks. That Costa Rica weather is for the birds.
