Trolling motor shaft length? - 02/07/16 09:33 PM

Can someone share their experience or knowledge on what criteria I should use to determine the best trolling motor shaft length for my boat -
22' Tahoe 215 w/ I/O? What difference will different shaft lengths make? Thanks for your help.

60 inch all the way...you can always adjust it to 45" but you can't adjust a 45" to 60".... roflmao

On a 22' boat Id say the biggest trolling motor you can get with the longest shaft possible.

Bigger is always better.

The longer the better, when you get in rough water you will be glad you have the length. MInn Kota has a 72" now.

They recommend to have 1 ft. of the trolling motor in the water for optimum performance. With that said, if it gets windy, you will need more than that to maneuver. Bigger is better. As stated above you can adjust up, can't make it longer.

Longer shaft gives you more options, BUT when you stow the TM make sure your front deck holds the entire motor. You don't want the head of the TM hanging outside of your boat which may get damaged when docking, especially windy days. Many 22 ft boat may not be suited for the 72" shaft . I think the tahoe has shorter front deck.
