Question for best White/Hybrid/Striper fisherman? - 08/13/15 02:58 PM

If you could only use 3 lures for the rest of your life...3 lures to have in your tackle box....which 3 lures would you have for these species?

Be specific with name, weight, colors, size, etc.

Of course, you could find this out by reading through the past articles on TFF. But, I'll give you a quick head start from what I've read and seen for Cedar Creek Lake guys:

Fastguy: Definitely a Sassy Shad on a jig head

SandJohnny (Eagle Mountain Lake): Definitely an Old Ugly slab

Billy Seaman (guide): definitely a Hell/Pet trolling rig and various slabs

Doyle Hollman: Various slabs

BigCrappie.com (guide): Hell/Pet for trolling and various slabs

SnagginSteve: Sassy Shad with jig head and slabs

Yours Truly: Definitely a Mepps Aglia plain silver spinner #4 and #2

If I mis-spoke for any of you, please correct me.

#9 Rapala shad rap, shad color on clear days orangish on cloudy days, Blue glass huskey deep diving Rapala on Texoma, runs about 14' deep and DD 22 shinny chartreuse, with white and orange on it. All have worked on Ben Brook, Texoma, RC, Whitney, and PK. Best bait is live shad. Just my opinion.

Re: Question for best White/Hybrid/Striper fisherman? - 08/13/15 04:38 PM

I have been guiding since 2008 and have only used 2 lures for whites/hybrids/stripers 99% of the time. On or near the surface I use a 5/8 ounce lipless crankbait in a chrome body. The other is a 2 ounce 180 shad-shaped design produced by Bryon Nolan. I use two main color patterns: either Chartreuse/White or holographic silver. THese two baits always produce fish, when many other fisherman aren't getting bit.

Check out redneckfishn.com, it is worth your time!!

chartreuse/white slab
sassy shad/fluke in chartreuse or white ice
6" pencil popper silver/blue

that would do it and is about all I ever use

I come from the whatever Dennis Christian says is correct so....
Mepps #2
Mepps #3
Mepps #4
And my friend has been using a Mepps #5 at times and having pretty good luck. It looks and sounds like he's casting his keys out in the water. He calls it the Apache in reference to the AH-64 helicopter.

Re: Question for best White/Hybrid/Striper fisherman? - 08/15/15 02:27 PM

Was thinking about this exact topic the other day..

1. Mepps #4 chartreuse or silver plain spinner
2. 1 1/2oz. Chartreuse or silver slab
3. 3/8oz. Rattlin' Rapala or Rat-L-Trap with chrome body, for when they're on top or close to it
4. Heddon Tiny Torpedo clear body. Just cause it's fun to watch em explode on it.

Re: Question for best White/Hybrid/Striper fisherman? - 08/15/15 02:50 PM

1. Mepps #4 plain
2. Baby torpedo in chrome
3. 3/8 oz. Castmaster spoon

Put 2 of each of these lures in a plastic tackle box with some snaps and you can fish any sand bass/hybrid lake in the state with good success.

If you bought all of the suggestions, then you will have to buy a bigger tackle box. Lots of things work on different days. Lures are generally sold to catch fisherman not necessarily to catch fish. Good luck and be sure to release some for seed.

Dad

More important is size and presentation. Are the fish on bottom? I would use slab. Have to then figure out size. Personally I think color is overrated. Hot water like now? Fish may be suspended and you need a horizontal presentation. Again figure out size of bait and match.

I want to play. By no means am I the best. I do get lucky from time to time though.

Glitter shad slab
Chartreuse swim bait with a white head
and then maybe a small black and chartreuse curly tail grub on a 1/4 ounce pink jig head for the creeks.

Chart 4-5 inch Wild Eye
Moes dead sticking head with various colors of flukes
Slab in chart

If I could get one more it would be a Redfin 7"
If I could get two more it would be a 1oz roadrunner.

As far as presentation is it better to drift for them with a vertical jigging technique drop and rip it up fast, or do you find that trolling a hell pet or with a 4 oz to 8 oz trolling weight with a spoon on it works best? Also when you troll is it best to troll around humps, ledges, and drop offs?

No trolling during the winter. Slow presentation when it's cold faster when it's warm.

We don't prefer the HellBender rig, but it is tough to beat right now (middle of summer) for high numbers in a short period of time.

Our baits of choice for white bass/hybrids usually consist of either Thump Buddies or Cotton Cordell slabs, both of which we either cast or bounce of the bottom.

As far as trolling to get into the depth of 30-40 ft going 2.5-3 mph what size trolling weight would you need of would you recommend a hell/pet right with a 1 oz weight on the front?

White/chartreuse cocahoe all other lures stay in the box collecting dust. If stripers are their and feeding nothing else needed!

Sooooooo...... when you use a white / chartreuse cocahoe and YOU dont catch anything the fish must not be biting at all? Every single fisherman with fish in whole location dousnt have a chance with say...a different lure? Lol How long did it take for you to convince yourself of this "fact"?

Re: Question for best White/Hybrid/Striper fisherman? - 08/21/15 12:27 AM

I guess you didn't under stand my remark. Its my go to lure if they are their it works. I don't need to use anything else. Nine time out of ten I limit out with it. And of course the ones gathering dust get a chance to be used. I'm sure even you have a personal best that you like.

I've always liked a good rooster tail chartreuse/white, a chartreuse/white slab, or a kastmaster

Is a good weight slab to start with a 2 oz or 1 oz. Something to vertically jig or cast out and retrieve.
