Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/02/15 03:06 AM

I'm back home for a couple of days and went fishing today. Caught 80 from 10am to 2 pm and went back out and caught 48 from 4:30 to 7 PM.

Details: on the 1st trip I started at Iron Wall Hump. Caught fish there in 23 fow on almost every cast. Left after I had a limit of whites still catching fish. Next spot was north tip of Spillway Hump in 15 fow. Caught another limit of whites and a 22 inch hybrid there. Checked Game Warden Hump but they are not there yet. Ended up 1st trip at Merimac in 15 fow and caught another 13 whites. Also caught 12 keeper sized yellow bass, 2 cats and 2 short hybrids. Most fish were caught on #4 but at Spillway Hump I had better luck with a #2 - caught the legal hybrid on the 2.

On the 2nd trip I started at Swing-set Hump and caught a fish every cast in 15 fow. Moved from there after I had 10 whites to East Hump but slow there. Went to east finger of Crappie Island Flats and caught fish in 25 fow every cast. Left there after catching 10 whites; also had 2 legal hybrids there. Last place tried was the south edge of Crappie Island Flats (some call this the drop-off)in 18 fow. Went in after catching 11 whites there. Also caught 8 short hybrids and 7 keeper yellow bass. All but a couple of fish were caught on #4 Mepps; the other 2 on #2 Mepps.

I would say fishing is good now at Cedar Creek.

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/02/15 01:40 PM

@cnr1875: I found they don't work as well with the skirts on, so I cut them off. Also, for a #3 add a 1/4 oz weight about 15 inches up the line from the Mepps. This will do 2 things - make it easier to cast and cause it to sink to the bottom faster. Use 10 to 12 lb fluorocarbon line and use either a spincast of bait casting reel rather than a spinning reel because you can't feel the light bite very well with a spinning reel. Shorter rods work better because they don't shake as much when you reel the Mepps. I use a 5 ft 6 in medium flex rod. Watch the video if you haven't. Good luck!

Also, since you've never caught white bass or hybrids, you will have to learn how to find them on a big lake. I highly recommend you hire a guide for a "teaching"
trip to show how to locate bottom structures and to see what concentrations of fish look like down on the lake bottom. Finding them is equally important as knowing how to catch them.

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/02/15 03:42 PM

Dennis, well spoken. If you don't know how to locate them you will never catch them. Once you learn that you can catch them on most anything if they are really bitting. If not your method seems to work really well. Never tried the Mepps method in my life until I read one of your post . It does work really well. Thanks for all the info!

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/02/15 04:22 PM

I will go going back out there for the Annual july trip 2nd-5th I will give it another go. I get more familiar with the lake each time and hopefully I hit a home run this time! Thank you so much for all the info Dennis It has been very informative! One day I will be able to get into them big!!! Might go out there next week to do a practice run. What ramp would you recommend for this time of year? We stay at Captains quarters and I bet there ramp is good now but is the water to high to go under 198 bridge to get to main lake in a center console with no T Top?

Mr. Christian,
Could you be hired for a half day for me and my son in law who are newbies for this type of fishing. Was fishing a bass tournament on Cedar Creek this past weekend and had a blast and I do some drift fishing for catfish but I am pretty much clueless for hunting sandies, hybrids etc. I don't live far from Cedar Creek and have fished it for many years and have done some fishing down at the dam on topwaters when Hybrids have been stacked there early in the morning. My son in law bought a Ranger Fish & Ski and has asked me to help him and grandson Garrett (one of my 8 grandkids) to learn some fun ways to catch fish because as much as I love to bass fish it is usually pretty tough fishing most of the time for me but it may be why I love it so much. When I was younger my parents had a place on Whitney and my dad would take us out trolling Hellbenders with trailing Abu spinners but that was about the extent of sandbass fishing and that was also about 40 years ago.

TBassYates: I don't hire out, but do go out with folks when I can to show them how to locate fish and use Mepps method. But can't do that now with wife in hospital. Chuck Rollins at BigCrappie.Com can take you on a teaching trip. He can show you how to find fish and catch them with a slab. Don't think he know the Mepps technique.

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/03/15 01:36 PM

Gander Mountain, Cabelas, and BassPro are your best bets. If they only have dressed baits (those with skirts ) cut them off.

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/03/15 02:40 PM

Dennis:

I grew up on the south end of the lake and my parents still live there. My dad rarely ventures up to the main lake but has a couple of spots we try close to Michaels cove that produce fish pretty often. I have read your post for a couple of years but I never know where the heck you are talking about!... Iorn wall, swingset hump, etc...
Is there a way you could give me the locations of a few of the spots you mention? My parents live by the old "sunny Glenn" if you remember that place..... just under the bridge from Michaels cove.

Me and my buddies want to do a night fishing trip June 13th! What lake would be a good lake to fish overnight in a pontoon boat with lights? Cedar creek or Tawakoni or any other lake
Posted By: Dennis Christian

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/05/15 07:38 PM

I think Cedar Creek would be great for that. Tawakoni and Richland Chambers should also do well, but I'll let folks from there confirm if conditions are safe and favorable.

The Iron Wall we used to fish was about mid-lake on the east side.

Re: Cedar Creek Report for Monday 6/1/2015 - 06/10/15 05:04 PM

Dennis, Im not for certain if they are involved with an organization. Honestly I've had several shirts with this logo and LOVE it and decided to add it as my signature here, just to express one of my favorite verses from the Bible.

And to show off the bass too..lol
