Rain won't hurt but this is a much needed stocking. Our previous (respectivly deceased) TPW guru told me that the normal stocking rate for PK should be 235,000.00 per year.(x amount of fish per surface acre)
After one of our bad GA kills we had a stocking of 90,000.00 in 2010. TPW was not ignoring PK they just did not have the fingerlings to stock because of GA in rearing ponds etc(production issues) That is my understanding.

This stocking is most welcome and thanks to those who worked hard to make it possible.

Randy - Any idea on how many of those 600,000 survive? I am assuming fingerlings having a better survival rate? 180 doesn't sound like a lot? You take that many out in a week with your guide business.

Wow! Thanks for the info Randy. I thought with the dang BRA draining the lake and some emails I got from TPWD that they had given up on PK.

The TPWD told me that due to the golden algae, they would not restock smallmouth in the lake. I asked about this after finding out how great the SM Bass fishing is at Texoma. I can understand that but PK is far from dead. Monday there were so many shad in Neely Slough you could not see the bottom with the hummingbird. Small bass and sandies had them constantly jumping along the bank. I also saw a bass fisherman pull a very big bass out Last weekend. Since the GA kills the shad first, I don't think the lake is currently affected by GA much.

TPW called and the 180,000 may not be on the way which is very disappointing.
I am thankful there keeping me posted.
I let the TFF community know when and if it happens. They will post what is stocked at a later date on the web.

Re: Good news for PK - 05/30/13 09:46 PM

why is this? My grandma caught a 6# small mouth back in the 90's. Does the Golden Algae take a heavier toll on them?

Re: Good news for PK - 05/31/13 05:33 PM

TPWD told me that the Golden Algae affects them more than other species. Big bummer for me. I like catching smallmouth and a wide variety of fish.

Re: Good news for PK - 05/31/13 06:53 PM

TPW called yesterday and they stocked 110,000 fingerlings yesterday. Its my understanding that fry don't survive very well.
I have heard its less than 10%. I dont think there is any way for them to know.
They make way more fry than they have room for. All of the fry they make won't fit into the ponds to be raised to fingerling size I guess. It still beats throwing them away.
I am no expert and these are just things I have been told over the years talking and fishing with TPW employees.
